    Hi,

    I guess the title says it all, but here’s the background: I am doing a PAL project shot in progressive mode on a Panasonic DVX-100B, editing in FCP 4.1 on a Mac G4. The image is really beautiful. But, as we all know, the bright reds tend to get blocky and generally ugly. I

    DV and most shades of red are like oil and water. And they will never play nice.

    DV is 4:1:1 for sampling

    mpeg2 is 4:2:0 for sampling

    DV is compressed by each frame

    Mpeg2 is compressed by a number of frames (GOP)

    Thanks for the answer. I guess there’s nothing I could do about it then.

    I also embedded this other question: What is really happening in the render preview?
    Placing the playhead on a “render needed” position of the timeline, makes the computer
    count for a while – rendering, I guess – and all looks nice. Is FCP doing these preview renders
    in some higher format? And if so – why? It really fools the user. Does it have to do with time-saving?

    You are watching this on a (broadcast) video monitor instead of in the Canvas window on your computer monitor, right? You should not be basing your editing (and especially color) decisions based on what is looks like in the Canvas window. Some things will not be seen at all, and that can depend on the scaling factor for the video in the window.

    If you are using DV then you should be watching this out through FireWire to the DV deck/camera then via Component/S-Video/Composite & audio cables to a video monitor and sound system.
