bob my uvw-1800 (betasp) deck has always had a shift when recording (and i can see that blue-line near the vertical interval area) but it plays back fine.
is there a switch or item menu that would make it not shift during recording?

it only happens on output right?
when you playback there should be no shift.
my digibeta only did this when I didn’t have genlock on itself and the multibridge extreme.
my betasp deck does it all the time though, and I’m not sure why.
but it plays back fine so I’m not really worried about it. -
Yeah turn that off completely.
Even our protools machines did this till we disabled the sleep function.
Macs are sure loud as hell when they sleep don’t they?
It’s almost as loud as the goodyear blimp.

I was in your shoes last year and we opted to stay with a G5 quad instead of mac pros.
Glad we did, because there are a number of people having issues with different software they use besides final cut pro that seems to be broken or half working on intel macs.
How is your current setup “long in the tooth”

I’ve been testing a number of downconversion techniques from
HD to SD and I have found that nesting your HD sequence into an
uncompressed 10 or 8-bit SD sequence, then exporting to compressor
yields the highest quality. -

I do client approvals with quicktime on a weekly basis.
I use sorenson 3 codec for video and ima 4:1 for audio.
320x240x15fps.Most folks can play sorenson 3 quicktimes, not all can play the latest codecs so thats what I stick with.
I don’t know the exact bitrate but :30 second spots are about 500k.
anyway, it gets the job done and is emailable.
Nice not to have to do vhs dubs anymore. heh -
It is possible to author dvds with 24p video.
I’ve not done it with DVDSP though.
you should export a short 30 or 60 second segment and just try it out.

That sounds right, but I have stuck to these settings for
the last 6 years and they have produced perfect playback
(and I do hundreds of titles per year)7mb max bitrate on the video.
8mb is too high in my book. dvd-+r has little error correction
unlike replicated media so you want the bitrate as low as possible
to avoid skipping across the greatest spectrum of players.256kbps on the audio with dolby.
I think 192kbps while ok is not quite good enough so i always
do 256.I have found -R media by Ritek to be VERY compatible with most of the install base of players, but thats just me.
