I have worked on high-speed camera image files as well (from the phantom cameras)

You need to make a new comp at 720×486.
Use the ae preset for NTSC D1
make sure the duration is the same as your image sequence.

drop the image sequence into the comp and scale it down till it
    fills the screen.

I would scale it to fit within action safe for maximum picture viewing in my projects.

I remember having to interpret the frame rate of the sequence too or it didn’t play right.

Rendering from the black magic 10-bit codec in AE is the correct procedure and it works
in realtime in FCP, but don’t change anything to RGB, just leave it as is in YUV space as somebody mentioned.

Its my understanding that the black magic codecs are basically the apple codecs, but with added metadata to accelerate or enhance the codec with the black magic hardware.

another thought might be doing the sub-titles in dvd studio pro, or just editing to a digibeta tape and having closed captioning done.

it might be more cost effective that way….my 002 cents

[Shane Ross] “10-bit uncompressed is overkill, and the drive requirements huge”

overkill is my middle name shane! 😉

I’m very used to the changing demands of my clients, that I have to be so they are never let down.

something is terribly wrong if you cannot render out 8 or 10-bit uncompressed and have it play real time in fcp with black magic hardware.

I’ve heard a lot of people having this, but 99% of the time
they rendered the video as 720×480 it MUST be 720×486.

one quick fix that would be faster than re-rendering if you have a gazillion layers in after effects, would be to download and convert with mpeg streamclip.

just open it and export it as 486 and it will do a great job of quickly converting it so it will play in realtime.

wow yeah thats really pushing hdv there.

    good job! 🙂

I know lots of people who use dvcpro-hd everyday, but I just can’t get over the fact that its not full native resolution. My eyes always see the compromise, so its not an option in my opinion, unless my client demands it.

If I were in your situation I would do full resolution uncompressed 10-bit.

    Interesting situation.

I do a lot of HDV on a G5 Quad as well.
    Works great.

How many layers or f/x are you doing?
How much system memory do you have?

    I’m running 4GB of memory.

    found an easier way.

    export a batch list
right click, open with excel (opens right up, no prompting for tab delimited formating)

edit timecodes, save, import to fcp, voila!

[JeremyG] “Standard Def NTSC is lower (DV and ‘Uncompressed’) as is DV PAL.”

    no.

Digital Betacam, BetaSP & D2 are all upper field.

These would all be captured via uncompressed.

uncompressed doesn’t equate the field order, its the source recording deck.

I have not yet compared them directly but I can tell you that the downconversion via the black magic hardware is stunning.

I think the downconversion from the JVC camera or deck has a bit of aliasing by comparison.
