That means someone has switched the output to SD/DV.
Go into the menu and change it to HDV or AUTO.
The Sony HDV Decks can play Canon HDV tapes perfectly, except for 24F tapes, those can only be played by Canon HDV Camcorders.

I own an HD100 and the BRHD-50 deck.
I would say its a waste of time and resources to ingest anything but HDV. It won’t improve at all by converting it and if you have a modern Mac system it won’t slow you down at all.
Capture your footage, edit etc..
when you have a completed timeline ready to render for DVD for example, save your project delete any renders you did, and change the sequence codec from hdv to prores and render that out .
It really is the best cleanest way to work with HDV.

Running OS X on a power mac G5 Quad.

Make sure you clone your system drive so that if things go horribly wrong you can simply boot from the clone and be up and running without delay.
Some folks have not done this and paid a steep price when they had problems.

I’d like to add, that Colorista does a better job than the built in CC tools in final cut.
