  • Updating to FCP 6 during a project

Posted by Bobby Holbrook ii on October 4, 2007 at 1:51 pm

    Hey Guys,

I’m working with FCP 5.14 and I’m ready to upgrade to 6. I have an open project that consist of close to 700 P2 HD clips and do to certain events and client request the job will not be finished for a mounth or two. Meanwhile I have 5 large jobs coming to post within the month and I really would love to use FCP 6 and its other tools for these up coming jobs. So the question: Can I Upgrade to FCP 6 without affecting the the first job that is still open? Will I lose anything or will anything change that can affect the open job in a negetive way? Any tips or ideas would be great..”Is it ok to UpGrade Now?”
    Thanks Bobby

P.S. I have Backed up all P2 files on the Open project and the timeline

The usual advice is to wait until a project is finished, but in this case I’d say go ahead. You can’t hold up your life for one client who wants to drag their heels. It sounds like right now will give you the least amount of conflict, at the very least.

As for the project, when you open it after upgrading, it will turn into a FCP 6 project. This is fine if you’re not sharing it with anyone. If any other editors are using your project, they’ll need version 6 too in order to open your file.

Other than that, just follow the standard backup advice in case anything gets corrupted. But assuming everything works, you should be fine.

The one big thing to watch out for is 3rd part itmes. Have you added any filters, plug-ins, or hardware cards? Check with the makers of those things to make sure they’re happy with the new FCP or you may risk breaking them.

    THanks Jeff,

As far as plug-ins and other outside filters go, I have not added any to the project yet. A few basic FCP Cross dissolves an FCP Three way color corrections is all i have done at this point until i recieve and import the rest of the footage. So if thats OK then Im going to Up grade tomorrow. If you think of anything else let me know please

    Thanks Jeff

Make sure you clone your system drive so that if things go horribly wrong you can simply boot from the clone and be up and running without delay.

Some folks have not done this and paid a steep price when they had problems.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Cloning first takes all the fear out of the equasion. It makes the whole thing a complete no-brainer.

I just recently did that as well. I have a full length feature movie that I’ve been editing on since March, and I really needed Apple’s new Color and ProRes. So, I needed to upgrade in the middle of the feature film. The 90 minute feature has 960 clips and 28 sequences. It was a big project.

So, I first backed up the older FCP5 version. (You can always go back to a previous version, if needed). And, then created a new FCP6 project. It opened fine. All the plug ins were there. It was relatively painless.

So you can always go back to FCP 5? I have a project in FCP 5 and I need to upgrade to FCP 6, but if there are problems later on, I would like to be able to go back FCP 5. Can I do this easily without complications?

Any project on which editing has proceeded toward completion using version 6 cannot be opened and continued in version 5.

What problems are you expecting??? Many, myself included have been using FCP version 6 since April 2007 without any substantial problems.
