October 10, 2007 at 5:03 pmMy understanding is you must use the Canon cameras to capture their HDV footage. It’s somewhat proprietary HDV codec.

October 10, 2007 at 5:07 pmCanon CLAIMS that their form of HDV is the same as Sony’s and that you SHOULD be able to use the Sony decks to capture CANON footage.
I have yet to hear of someone doing that successfully.

That means someone has switched the output to SD/DV.
Go into the menu and change it to HDV or AUTO.
The Sony HDV Decks can play Canon HDV tapes perfectly, except for 24F tapes, those can only be played by Canon HDV Camcorders.

October 11, 2007 at 2:35 amok try just HDV. (auto usually works)
If it still can’t play then it must be a 24f recording.
I capture Canon HDV often on that deck and it works.

October 12, 2007 at 1:26 amI get a whole lot more reliable captures when the deck is switched to the appropriate format (DV or HDV) explicity, rather than relying on AUTO. Apple even suggests that you do so: https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407
If people are reusing tapes and/or have mixed DV and HDV encoded material, then FCP doesn’t deal well with the format changing while playing back or during capture.
