you’re good to go with Nattress then. I just did a documentary with it and it turned out much better than compressor did.

There are no “artifacts” in a Natress PAL conversion.
There can be if you use compressor.
The slightly softer picture has to do with the picture being enlarged nearly 100 pixels.
720×486 becomes 720×576 and a slightly different pixel ratio. In that regard it makes perfect sense that the picture would be slightly soft.the only thing that could make it better is an expensive hardware device like a Teranex.

The picture will soften just a bit.
Thats what you get for that price point of pal conversion.
Spend more transferring it through a terranex if that doesn’t suffice.

maybe its anamorphic but not flagged as such. (the crt problem)

there’s nothing in the preferences or settings to indicate this?
maybe its doing 12 or 10 bit only.
make a 16-bit psd with a smooth color gradient, see if it bands.
