    From another board:

The P2 Store needs to be rebooted to work in Mac mode. They put out some sort of technical advisory bulletin to describe the situation.

Here’s what you’re supposed to do:
Plug in the USB cable to the Mac and the P2 Store.
Make sure the USB light lights up.
Press and hold down the Cancel button, the Battery Level indicator, and the Hard Disk Drive capacity indicator simultaneously, and hold ’em down for five seconds.

The USB LED light should change color. It should go orange for Mac, and green for Windows.

  • I used this method for monitoring with my Varicam. It works, and it is inexpensive compared to Broadcast monitors. I have since upgraded, but I still have my Blackmagic SDI to DVI converter. It is for sale if you are interested.

Don’t forget the 1200a must be equipped with the HD-SDI boards if you want to record. The firewire board only allows you to ingest material. This is why the deck is $30,000.

March 4, 2006 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Preset white balance K value adjustment?

    Jamie,

Regrettably, the Varicam does not have the ability to adjust white balance in 100k increments like the SDX. I wrote Panasonic and suggested an upgrade, but apparently it is not possible. That is the best feature of the SDX!

I added the RGB gain to my user menus. I can color correct every scene on the fly… warm it up, or cool it down, while keeping the whites, white.

You could try another setting in the battery menu and see what happens. The level meters on those batteries are notoriously inaccurate. Anton Bauer recently replaced several of my Hytron 120’s as they failed to take a charge, even though the meters indicated full charge. They have a three year warranty.

I hope Panasonic offers an archive device for the P2 system. I have been in discussions with several clients, and this is a major issue for them. Firewire drives are cheap but do not have the reliability of Tape. DVDR does not have enough capacity.

February 7, 2006 at 6:18 am in reply to: Sync issues in varicam 24p….DVD RAM audio sources

A sound mixer friend sent me the following response to your post. He is not registered here, so I am posting on his behalf. Hope this helps.

“I would say that it sounds like a pullup or pulldown issue. He doesn’t
mention which way the drift is going. He should post the actual TC and
sample rate specs the sound recordist used to record the tracks. He should
mention what NLE app he’s using. Sounds to me like he’s just trying to input
BWF files straight into FCP which will bring in the audio but not the TC
metadata. He needs to convert the BWF files to Quicktime files using Sebsky
tools and then he will have his timecode as well.”

    Sam,

I am curious, have you had any problems since 9/11? I have had a few issues with TSA not repacking a case properly, but nothing has been stolen or trashed. I have taken a different approach to travel. I have custom built cases made from Thermoclear. They are light and have similar shock resistance to Thermodyne cases. Because they are light, I never pay excess weight charges and they are easy on my back. I tried a similar method of carrying gear onboard, but I found it difficult when the plane was fully loaded. Everyone wants that overhead space, and I need the legroom on long flights.

In addition to my own insurance, I require all of my clients to provide me with coverage. At the end of the day, if there is a loss, it is covered. I traveled nearly 100,000 miles last year and I have had no losses. Perhaps I am lucky.
