I have found that setting-up the Varicam with a good chart (DSC) removed most of the noise. Using the film mode also helps. There is also the Dark Compression option… I leave it on all the time on my camera.

I bought the HD Link Extreme. Check with your dealer to see which version your mac needs.

Your only real option is a Black Magic or AJA card. I just added the basic Black Magic HD card to my FPC system. It was about $1000.00 and works great. HDSDI and component outputs. Plug and play and watch your edit in real time.

April 30, 2006 at 3:10 pm in reply to: Slow copy from P2 Store to Mac and pther Mac related Gripes. The problem is that one folder from a P2 card could have hundreds locked files. Unlocking all of those files would take forever. I wish there was an option to turn off the lock feature.

I discovered the P2 Import from P2 Store in FCP provides a significantly faster import via USB.
The bonus of this method is that you do not have all of those locked MXF files on your hard drive.

P2 has its limitations, and is not right for all shoots. I don’t think you can use price as the main point for comparison. I find the idea of an outboard recorder cumbersome, and thus P2 cards/ P2 store are the better value in my opinion. For a long concert, where the cameras are static, the outboard devices have merit… watch that firewire cable as it does not lock in place!
The firewire out on the HVX is always your frame rate over 60p (at 720) like the Varicam. There are no native frame rates output via firewire.

What so wrong with P2 cards? I have used them with great success.
With P2 cards, you can record native frames and thus have more recording time. An 8 gig card can record 20 minutes at 720 24p. The outboard firewire recorders capture at 60 fps like a Varicam. Off speed footage must be frame rate converted to get the desired look.

The Varicam is still the superior camera. Wide dynamic rage and variable frame rates are just a few reasons why.

Steve,
It’s one thing to show a working mock-up at NAB, ( I held the Kinetta last year) the next step is much more difficult. These products will have no impact until they can actually manufacture and deliver. Red will not be delivering any time soon. To this date, only Panavision and Arriflex have working product (in this class) on the market. Professionals need proven formats, reliability, and support. Until these new players can meet these standards, their products will have no impact on the market. The Varicam has too wide a user base to see much impact.
I wish Panasonic would build a big chip Varicam, PL mount!
Chris, I still own a set of Zeiss PL primes, Bell

Steve,
I think it is important to remember that none of these new digital cine cameras exist yet… so I don’t think Panasonic has much to fear. The Varicam will continue to be successful because it has a wide user/owner base. The format is accepted as a broadcast format, and Panasonic has a large service and support network. These factors are very important to the success of a product.
I am excited by the prospect of these new cameras (large chips, no prisms, less compression), but I don’t think they will have much impact on the Varicam. It’s use is too broad.
My 2 cents.
