  • Output from Final Cut to Panasonic BT LH1700WP Monitor

Posted by David Telling on May 2, 2006 at 4:40 pm

Could anyone recommend a reasonably priced solution for outputting DVCProHD (720-24PN) from Final Cut Pro to the Panasonic BT LH1700WP LCD Monitor (and other SDI/DVI/Component capable plasmas).

I have researched the AJA Kona and BlackMagic Decklink products but they may be more than I need, right now. So far, I am happy with the P2 workflow and do not need uncompressed input capabilities – mainly just good additional monitoring options in addition to using an Apple 23″ Cinema display. (I understand the 17″ Panasonic may not be ideal for critical color correction, but it appears to be reasonably accurate and will probably work for my purposes).

Are there other interfaces/options available that could fit this monitoring requirement or is AJA or BlackMagic the best way to go? (Connecting one of the above monitors via the second Apple DVI connector is not a viable HD solution, correct?)

If I did need an AJA or BlackMagic solution, could one of their earlier cards fit my requirements for the set up below (e.g. PCI compatibility)? Any preferences/recommendations of products?

Thanks so much for any input.

Apple Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5

Have you gone from the camera’s component outputs? You could do it from P2 or using FCP to playthrough if you want to look at your edit. Otherwise you should go with one of the AJA or BMD cards. Haven’t looked at their lines recently but you should be able to find something pretty affordable for just HD monitoring.

    Hi Noah…

    Thanks for the fast response.
I use the camera’s component out for monitoring to the Pana LCD in the field, and know I can output back to a P2 Card from Final Cut for later review via the camera…but I’m looking for “real time” monitoring while working on timelines in Final Cut (in addition to the Cinema display). As I understand it, I can’t use my HVX200 (via firewire) as an output device for this purpose, correct?

    Thanks

    David,

Your only real option is a Black Magic or AJA card. I just added the basic Black Magic HD card to my FPC system. It was about $1000.00 and works great. HDSDI and component outputs. Plug and play and watch your edit in real time.

Thanks Chris, I appreciate your help.

Would you mind telling me the specific name (model number?) of your card with HDSDI and component out. Are you using it on a PCI-X or PCI Express G5?
As I understand it, the DeckLink HD Extreme is for the new PCI Express equipped Macs. Mine is PCI-X.

    David,

I bought the HD Link Extreme. Check with your dealer to see which version your mac needs.

    Chris…

Thank you so much for the assistance.

Needing a PCI-X solution, and reading about the hardware acceleration for DVXProHD on the AJA boards, I managed to purchase an “open-box, never used” (we’ll see) AJA Kona 2 card for $1275 on EBAY.
Again, this is more than I need right now, but the price seemed pretty good and it does give me some additional flexibility.

    Truly appreciate the help.

All the current DeckLink cards are PCIe. Get a Kona LH or LHe… it also has analog. $1,600.
