No, you are not crazy. You are looking at an SD image scaled to the LH900’s 1280x 720 res. Your Varicam has a substantially more resolution than the SDX, hence it looks sharper.

When I shoot SD, I prefer an 8″ SD CRT. HD LCD’s look awful when fed SD. They are designed for HD.

    Joseph,

Were you able to successfully get the 60p footage to convert with the Final Cut Frame Rate Converter?

I seem to recall the GPS function was specifically designed for power line inspections. My guess is the GPS info is constantly updated.

Can the Firestore remove the extra frames and only record 24pN? If not, then you do not have many options. Unfortunately firewire recording has some limitations, this may be one of them.

The HDX is a duel format camera. It can record either 720p or 1080i. When you shoot 1080l, you are laying down 1080 60i to tape. When you shoot 720p, you are laying down 720 60p to tape. When you shoot 24p in 1080, a pulldown is added to get you to 29.97.

You can only use the FRC with 720p footage, and your choices are limited with the HDX.

PS: anyone know if you can frame rate convert 60p footage from the HDX with the FRC for slow mo effect? Is 60p flagged like a varicam?

The FRC is strictly for 720p. Slow motion and fast motion effects are possible because you are shooting 60 frames a second. 1080i is interlaced, and there is nothing which can be converted for effect. What you shoot, is what you get. (24pA being the exception, but not part of the FRC)

Panasonic is working on a new H264 based codec. I would not expect to see a P2 Varicam until this new codec is implemented. Maybe next year at NAB.

Did you turn on the dark compression? Setup with the Varicam is essential, use a good chart like the chroma du monde before you shoot.

    Joe,

It’s not an electronic effect, it’s real slow mo… up to 60 fps. Much better than slow mo programs that interpolate.

It just requires a few extra steps to get there. Watch this tutorial for a better understanding:

I seem to recall DVCPRO tape is engineered to be recorded over 200 times on a single cassette. I would not worry. In my 2.5 years with my 1200a and Varicam, I have never had an issue with tape integrity.

    Log away!
