Unfortunately in this respect the Varicam system is not like the film camera that it’s meant to replace. To visualize the slo motion you need to use either a hardware frame rate converter (manufactured by Panasonic) or a software frame rate converter (which is a plug-in in FCP).

The HVX200 operates differently in that it can play back the slow motion off the P2 card.

Thanks, that’s what I expected. Is the quality of the electronic slo mo worth the extra effort of redigitizing, as compared to using slomo in AE7 or a plugin like Twixor?

Joe,

It’s not an electronic effect, it’s real slow mo… up to 60 fps. Much better than slow mo programs that interpolate.

It just requires a few extra steps to get there. Watch this tutorial for a better understanding:
