I own a varicam H Package but on a recent project my clients wanted to shoot with the SDX900,
I was using it with my Fujinon HD lenses and my BT-LH900A 8.4″ Multi-Format Monitor, since this was the first time I used this monitor with an SD camera (using regular video in) I noticed a weird problem where the overall image seemed soft no matter how much peaking I was using, trough the view finder everything was sharp.

No, you are not crazy. You are looking at an SD image scaled to the LH900’s 1280x 720 res. Your Varicam has a substantially more resolution than the SDX, hence it looks sharper.

When I shoot SD, I prefer an 8″ SD CRT. HD LCD’s look awful when fed SD. They are designed for HD.

Using the SDI input also gives you a sharper image with the SDX. Of course this means you need to use an SDX with the SDI card installed. Still, it’s way better than the composite input.

I have the same monitor, looks great using SDI and the HDX900 camera. Using composite in and a 4:3 source from DVCAM, the monitor is jaggy. Must be the upsizing that’s doing it.
