According to Doug Jensen in the Vortex Media DVD, “Mastering the PMW-EX1,” the process he recommends is just dropping the EX footage into a DV-NTSC timeline, and editing the entire thing in SD. I haven’t tried it yet myself, but I intend to do a little experimenting today. I’ve already edited a small project in HD and then let compressor do the SD-mpeg2 conversion and the resulting DVD looked great.

I think I just answered my own question, if anyone is interested. SP clips when brought in using XDCAM transfer use the HDV codec, so, theoretically, should be editable in FCP 5.1 without having to capture using firewire.

The clips will be imported from the camera to a portable hard drive using FCP 6, so that is not a problem. My question has to do with whether the clips can then be edited on an FCP 5.1 system. Since EX files recorded in the Sp mode are supposed to be essentially the same as HDV, can the raw files be edited in FCP 5.1, or do I need to capture the video by way of the Firewire output of the camera?

As far as a short-term solution to your file storage is concerned, one dual-layer DVD will hold the contents of an 8-gig SxS card.

The rainbow effect won’t be noticed by most. If this is a major concern, go with the Samsung with the LED light engine. My main objection to DLP for events is that the brightness falls off dramatically as you move off axis compared to LCD & Plasma.

I think your problem is with FCP 4.5, not Quicktime. I had the same problem occasionally with 4.5. When 5.0 came along, the problem disappeared for good. By-the-way, If my memory serves me correctly, when this happens, don’t try to abort the capture. Just be patient. It takes a while, but eventually the drive will stop spinning, the capture will end, and everything will be normal.
