  • Can I downgrade from QT 7.4 to 7.2?

Posted by Greg Golden on January 28, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I have gotten myself in a mess apparently by upgrading my PowerMac G5 to 10.4.11 and (I assume) the Quicktime version along the way. The problem has shown itself when doing a “Capture Now” limited to 90 minutes. I’ve read other posts and, like them, the capture won’t stop by pressing . It is eating nearly all of my scratch disk. This sort of capture was successful hundreds of times before the upgrade.
Two questions: Can I simply go back to QT 7.0 and then find upgrades (a downgrade?) until I reach 7.1 or 7.2? or do I have to go deeper and reinstall the OS, too?

I am using FCP 4.5, 1.5 gigs of RAM on a Quad Core G5, vintage 2004.

I think your problem is with FCP 4.5, not Quicktime. I had the same problem occasionally with 4.5. When 5.0 came along, the problem disappeared for good. By-the-way, If my memory serves me correctly, when this happens, don’t try to abort the capture. Just be patient. It takes a while, but eventually the drive will stop spinning, the capture will end, and everything will be normal.

I don’t know what exactly is causing your problem, QT or FCP, but to answer your question, the two ways I know of to revert back to a previous version of QT is to either reinstall your operating system or use time machine (10.5 only). There might be another way, but I would think that you risk making your operating system semi unstable if you just start deleting anything that says QuickTime.

Thanks, all. I was just made aware of this link, but it was too late. https://www.macnn.com/articles/08/01/26/red.quicktime.74.issues/

I suppose that I’ll try to go back to 10.3.9 and find QT 7.2 unless somebody has a better idea.

I’d love to be able to upgrade from 4.5. I have two edit desks and the OTHER one is not the newest FCP release, but the one before that. I work for a church, and video isn’t crucial here or at the forefront of everyone’s thinking, so I wait and I wait. It’s a great idea, though!

You can use Pacifist to downgrade to QT 7.2

You need to find a QT 7.2 installer on Apple.com somewhere.

    Follow the directions here:

I don’t think you can downgrade 10.4.11 below 7.3. To get back to 7.2 I think you have to backslush the OS.

    All the best,
