How do you record HDV back to the EX1, Tony? We have a long thread on this issue over at the HDV forum, and the consensus seems to be that it can’t be done.

Oh yes, it’s true. On some discs, several in my case, air gets in between the layers and a fungus develops, which results in a very noisy image that gets progressively worse. This was supposedly corrected once the problem was discovered, but I have it on a couple of the most recently manufactured discs.

While you were at it, Craig, did you happen to ask about the problem with duplicate clips appearing in the bin while using File Transfer inside of FCP?

That’s what I thought, but this is the method that this “expert” uses, so I though I would give it a try. It seems to be faster, and the end result looked to me to be very close to what I got by editing in a “Native” timeline and then out to Compressor, except, of course, for the slo-mo.
Thanks for the tip. I’m sure the field issue is what I am seeing.

Peter, are you speaking of the EX?
If so, check to see if that position is set to ATW in the menu. -
A problem has cropped up in my EX footage when rendered in a DV-NTSC timeline. I applied slow- mo (30%) in FCP to a couple of clips. I do this all the time with my DVCAM footage with acceptable results, but when these EX clips are rendered in a DV timeline, the result is horrible. It just looks like every other frame is missing, as though no frame-blending is applied. Not usable at all. The footage, by-the-way, was shot in the SP (HDV) mode at 1080-60i.
The slo-mo looks fine when I render the footage in an HDV timeline.

10 minutes. It took about 15 minutes to render on a 2.66 Dual-Core MacPro. Mostly cuts, dissolves, a bit of color-correction and one 10 second clip with SmoothCam.

OK, I tried it. I dropped the EX clips into a DV-NTSC Anamorphic timeline, rendered and it worked. It looks good on my NTSC monitor. Next, I’m going to burn DVDs using both methods, and see which one looks best. Since I work with DVCAM, I have no way to test this going back to Beta, but I suppose the same method would work with other codecs or an uncompressed SD sequence.

In this case, Doug put the footage into a 4×3 sequence and panned & scanned. I’m going to try an anamorphic sequence and see what happens.
