You can downconvert by way of SDI, component, composite or S-video.

I saw the footage at a presentation he gave in L.A., and it’s all true. That is what convinced me to buy the camera. We were watching it projected on a large screen, and I don’t think anybody in the room could tell which footage was from which camera.

Since, up to this point, I have always shot with a DSR300 (DVCAM), shooting progressive is new to me. Are there any special settings in FCP or Compressor that I need to make when using prorgessive footage?

The double-clip problem is a known issue. I had hoped that Sony addressed this in v. 2.5.1.
I guess not. The solution is not to import the clips from inside FCP. Launch the File transfer program independently and the import the folder into FCP.

Regarding the formatting of cards, I just erased the contents of 4 cards using the “erase all clips” command. After that, one of the cards kept giving me the error message, “Media needs to be restored.” I would restore the card and of course, there would be no clips. This happened every time I powered up the camera, and only with this one card. Finally, I just re-formatted the card, and now, everything is fine. So, even though the advice on the Vortex Media DVD is to erase clips instead of re-formatting, I think I will be re-formatting from now on.

Is there such a thing as an XDCAM tape? Do you mean SxS card, or XDCAM disc?

XDCAM Transfer and FCP6 DO work on a G4 Powerbook. I just tried it myself. Editing is sluggish and realtime is very limited (a dissolve or color-corrector will give you the orange line), but the native SP and HQ files playback fine from the timeline. So, you can import your clips from the EX thru USB, and do simple editing.
