Yep… It used to be fairly common, but was “fixed” a couple updates ago… Restarting FCP cures it, ’til it happens again. 😉 And to be fair, it happens very, very rarely these days, if at all. That said, I’ve seen it reappear. Essentially, you’ll know you’ve got a problem if the Undo command stops working. That tell’s you FCP isn’t keeping track of what you’re doing. This is bad. I’m not totally sure it’s an FCP problem actually, I think it might be an OS (core data) thing. In any case, I hit Undo every now and again even if I don’t need to, or check the menu to make sure it’s not greyed out just to be safe. Honestly, though, it’s very unusual these days…

Don’t have an answer for that, but I do know that you can set the flags and field dominance in X. Select the clip, and check the Video tab Settings View in the inspector. I think it’s in there…

First off, nice series, thanks!. Just wanted to pipe in on the primary… As you may or may not know, i cut promos/trailers, have been using X a lot, and avoided the primary as well, for the same reasons you mention. Last couple projects though, I “forced” myself to start using it and I must say, I’m kind of digging it. 🙂 I’ll rough out bits as connected clips, then dump em in the primary and move on. I still detach the sync audio… until the expanded clips get fade handles etc it’s still easier to work with it separately. The snorkels do a good job of keeping everything in sync, ands it’s a hell of a lot easier to move chunks around. I guess chopping up gap in primary gets you the same functionality… but the primary kinda rocks once the old muscle memory (KB shortcuts etc) gets trained. lol
[John Davidson] Pre 10.0.6 we had tons and tons of projects as versions and it started getting sloppy, even with folders. Now with new the CC format it’s neat and clean.
Isn’t it just as messy using CC’s?… other than the fact that everything lives in the event? I’ve always made a “master” project folder for each event (same name), then subfolders (containing deeper subfolders) for all the different spots and versions. I’m sure that, like you, I’ll have at least 5 – usually more – versions of a spot before it even gets to V1. And then multiple versions after that. Usually around 10-15 or so projects (sequences) for each spot. And I’ll often have 5 or more spots… a lot of projects. 😉 Honestly, I like keeping that mess out of the event. It also allows me to duplicate the “master” folder, and pull out and archive folders of projects that I don’t need. I guess it’s a workflow thing? We do mostly movies, so we’re often cutting stuff for the same feature for months at a time.
In any case… thanks for taking the time to put that tutorial together!

Cut on FCPX, onlined on an Avid of some flavor. Honestly, other than the nice clean picture, the effects in the offline looked better…There are some great plugins for X… Groundbreaking? Nope. Not gonna win a key art for this. 😉 But it was all over TV and the intertubes, and it was cut on X. Fast. 😉

FWIW, I upgraded to an ATI Radeon HD 5870 in my old Mac Pro, same RAM as yours but with the 2.26 processors, and it made a huge difference.

Just hazarding a guess here… the skimmer will park anywhere, including on a subframe, and as far as i know… X will insert audio at that point, even if it’s not on a frame boundary. Next time, after you park your skimmer, use the arrow key to move the playhead forward or back so it’s definitely on a frame boundary, then do the insert and see if that helps. This isn’t an issue with a video insert, as it will put the cut on a frame boundary even if the playhead is parked mid-frame, but with audio it will just drop it in, maybe leaving a partial frame “sliver” left over. Again, just a wild guess…

mmm… R-Mags. I replaced a drive in one once, mainly because they didn’t make them anymore at the time and reconditioned units were about a billion dollars. The actual drive was literally the size, and close to the weight, of a brick. 🙂 Fun! But hey, the technology was good enough for B-52 Bombers (or something like that…) so…

He’s speaking about clip skimming, which is very cool. Stack 3 or 4 clips on top of each other, as if you were compositing something. “normal” skimming, and/or dragging the playhead over that section, will show you the top clip, or composite of all shots. With clip skimming on, hover over any clip in the pile and you will see only that clip, and the TC display will show the source clips TC. Very useful. Works for individual audio clips too.
