“Edit Slivers” when making insert edits
Posted by Stephen N. on January 8, 2013 at 8:04 pmWhen making insert edits with the “w” key, FCP X sometimes creates these little “slivers” in between 2 edit points. Is this a bug?
Running FCP X 10.0.7
Thanks!

January 8, 2013 at 9:33 pmYou have placed audio in the primary storyline. And by hitting W you’re telling the software you want to INSERT whatever you’ve selected in the Event Browser into your audio track. Since we can’t see your EB, theres no way to tell what you might have selected there. If it is, in fact, a small slug of audio, then the software is doing precisely what you’re telling it to do.
Before you invoke INSERT – then you need to tell the software WHAT to insert, and that’s typically by making a range selection or highlighting a clip somewhere in the EB and WHERE to insert it. Which corresponds to the location of your skimmer.
Hope that helps.

January 8, 2013 at 9:56 pmHi Bill,
I completely understand that. See this screen shot below:I am inserting audio from the event browser and into the timeline where the skimmer is. It is in between a cut. Audio is VO and I place it in the primary storyline. Whenever I insert in between 2 cuts (as seen in the screen shot), even with the skimmer placed exactly where I want the insert to be made, sometimes these little slivers or slugs appear.

January 9, 2013 at 12:07 amJust hazarding a guess here… the skimmer will park anywhere, including on a subframe, and as far as i know… X will insert audio at that point, even if it’s not on a frame boundary. Next time, after you park your skimmer, use the arrow key to move the playhead forward or back so it’s definitely on a frame boundary, then do the insert and see if that helps. This isn’t an issue with a video insert, as it will put the cut on a frame boundary even if the playhead is parked mid-frame, but with audio it will just drop it in, maybe leaving a partial frame “sliver” left over. Again, just a wild guess…

January 9, 2013 at 12:56 amThanks for the suggestion Charlie, but I’ve tried that with the same result. It does not just do this with audio, but with video as well.
This has me and my freelance editors baffled!

January 9, 2013 at 2:35 amOk, seems that overall what you’re doing makes sense.
(tho personally, I seldom mix video and audio in the same primary, I know others do and that shouldn’t really make a difference)So now I’m wondering what you’re upgrade history has been. There’s been a lot of development work since V1 of FCP-X in audio plumbing. Has your copy of X been upgraded from older versions or is it a relatively new install?
I ask because I’ve read of some folks doing incremental upgrades and having issues with parts of the code not sorta being “cleaned out” with those incremental updates.
If you have a recent fresh install, ignore this. If not, a reinstall and possibly a permissions repair and general system clean up *might* help.
That’s all I’ve got since I haven’t had any of the issues you seem to be facing on any of my dozens of projects over the past year.
Sorry I can’t be more help.

January 9, 2013 at 3:50 amDid the audio have a split edit (overlapped j/l cut) before insert?

January 9, 2013 at 2:54 pmI have been upgrading since V1. I’ll try and do a re-install and repair permissions. This is happening on different machines, so I’m not sure how much a fix it will be.
Jeremy, there it is not a split edit before insert.

January 9, 2013 at 7:07 pmIf this isn’t a bug, the only way I can see this happening is by what Charlie describes.
You might not be inserting at the very end of a clip.
