  • [Oliver Peters] “Since you could already export with roles summed into audio stems shows that this architecture was there, pre-10.3. The need to use compound clips for submixes points to a less-than-adequate approach to solving the problem. “

It’s a lot different under the hood. The fact that it doesn’t appear to be is, in my opinion, why this took so long. I don’t think they’re done, but just guessing…

    Nope.

The only bias I detect here — and it’s very obvious — is that in favor of Cows. What, no other livestock are capable of creativity?!? This is an egregious affront to other animals, and any thinking, caring person should not stand idly by for it!

I’d go so far as to call it bulls**t, but that implies that bulls**t is somehow worse than other type of s**t. And that would be wrong.

[Noah Kadner] “But what would you be willing to pay? If it were third party it could easily cost as much as US $499 for the Optimus Popularis.

Yeah, probably not that much if all I got was some editing shortcuts and a navigation slider. But if lots of apps, not just FCP X and the other few that were on board, start doing cool things with it (which they probably will) who knows…

[Douglas K. Dempsey] “It would be great to see an external keyboard with the Touchbar — an expensive proposition and there is likely not a large enough pool of users.”

If that was on an external keyboard I’d buy it yesterday. 🙂

[Robin S. Kurz] “[James Ewart] “I don’t think editing roles will allow you to change colour of primary storyline … not on my system anyway.”

Every clip has a video and/or audio role assigned to it. Every role has a selectable color. Therefore…

You can change the color of Video Only Clips. Video with Audio components takes the color from the Audio Role. If the audio components have multiple Roles the Video (and collapsed embedded Audio components) are grey. 🙂

[Trevor Asquerthian] “In the world of broadcast it is normal to have multiple different audio configurations. “

Same here. I find that turning off the auto audio channel grouping stuff helps, and X gets it right. More user config options is always better though…

[Jeremy Garchow] “But they couldn’t work the same as it would screw up compositing order.”

Yep… don’t think that’s in the cards. Secondaries work great if you need everything in a line…

October 31, 2016 at 1:52 am in reply to: Audio Mixing…

[Bill Davis] “Previously, all output from X was auto mixed down to either stereo or 5.1. But with 10.3 this is no longer the case. “

This is still the case… There is no way, currently, to have FCP X play out multiple discrete channels.

[Bill Davis] “You can, for example, change a stereo component to dual mono and via the application of settings apply things like level adjustments as well as EQ metadata – and that will now be expressed as channel data on export.”

Not sure what you’re saying here… But as you noted what has changed is that Parent Roles are now basically mix buses. For this reason, you can’t assign Parent Roles directly to audio components anymore. Components are now assigned subroles so… subroles are now essentially channels. It’s pretty cool how they did this actually.

When you put a project into a Compound clip now, it mixes all the subroles into their parent Roles, which you can show in Lanes and apply EQ/Effects etc. You can also view the CC components as subroles, where all clips with the same subrole are mixed together and the apply effects etc to them in Lanes view.

If you apply an effect to a clip with multiple components with different Roles (i.e. Dialogue and Effects), And put that in a Compound clip (or Multicam or Synced clip), when you show the Roles you’ll see a new “Mixed Audio” Role. For that reason… be careful applying Effects to multichannel clips with mixed Roles. Best thing to do is only apply effects to components.

[Bill Davis] “This is what he meant, I think, by saying each clip can be thought of as it’s own mini-mixer. If I understand this correctly, it’s a potentially HUGE game changer in X audio handling.”

Well, if by that he means that when you apply an effect to a clip it mixes the output(s) to a Role(s), then sure. ? The game changer for FCP X is that it sets the stage for a UI for signal processing/mixing. If they want to do that…

[Bill Davis] “One last thing is that unless you expand your audio components beyond just the default stereo on a clip, your audio components remain limited unless you go and “open in timeline” to reveal them. “

That’s always been the case, it was the only way to assign multichannel Roles in X until now.

Anyway, back on topic… there’s no way yet to do live, discrete multichannel output. Not export, you could always do that via Roles, but playback.

Well, he is providing confirmation bias for some… 😉
