Til it don’t look all right. If the heads are cleaned and the machine is in a good clean cool invironment, you can go well past the 3000 hours. Just keep a watch for possible tape scratches, etc.

I went to Avid from a linear background. It was actually very easy for me to make the transition. It was, after all, originally created for Linear editors to make a transition into non/linear concepts. I attempted Premiere 6.0 ( I think it was) and had absolutely no luck at all understanding it. I went to Vegas, had problems at first but it started to work for me. I now have Premiere Pro, and am starting to understand it. Believe me, and Avid background is no help in understanding and learning most of the other systems, at least it wasn;’t for me. I now use all three and hvae found it is nice to use whichever system fits the project best that I am working on.

Not working for me either, have to think about why it isn;t working. I know what you are attempting, but not sure the method is right for it.

I had that once and it drove me crazy for awhile. by spreading the timeline out, I discovered I had (can’t remember whether 1/4, 1/2, or full frame of blank space). It didn’t see that as black. Forget exactly but it was something on that respect.

I have always felt tape is cheap. If you had been using tape backups from day one, you wouldn’t have this problem now. Time to back up, my clients have always paid for tape in the original billing, and never once did I have a problem with them questioning it. We always kept the tape unless they asked to take it with them at which time we would inform them of the importance of storage in a cool dry environment.
Sorry there is no simpler answer. Just remember tape is cheap compared to total loss of creative time and property.

I think I understand your delimma.
I was involved in producing commercials for Moldova in two languages, Russian and Romanian. It was a huge undertaking financed by the US congress. We produced several commercials to educate the people about the government auction to allow people to buy a business and these announcements were attempting to educate the people about the benefits of private enterprise in hopes that people would take the opportunity to obtain a business and better themselves.
I was told that after all that work, many of the people never fully understood what was being said and the auctiions were not nearly sa successful as expected. How do you educate people about something they’ve never had any prior experience, without taking a lot of time explaining one on one.
I don’t think there is any easy answer, just work to convince the people how benificial it will be to handle things more professionally, after you have educated them about what professional is.
Sorry I don’t have any pat answer for you. This is something we should spend some time researching how to achieve your goals.

Just didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea and think that jsut because it was edited in a 10 bit uncompressed that any video shoot would be ok.
