Yep Frank told me. Get the kids to push buttons for awhile, or take a much needed vacation and bring the family to Vegas to recuperate.

I totally agree, you aren’t interviewing the setting. The interest should be in the interviewee, not the set.

[Chip Johns] “So I feel that many times the greatest accomplishments in society are usually by individuals who do not have as much natural ability, they know it and they work 100 times harder than the natural…”
I don’t think this is totally true in this case. First, I really don’t call it a natural ability, it is developed over time, but there is no real way to teach it, you just learn how to feel it as you go. Also as to working harder if you don’t have natural ability again is not totally true, many just let it happen, where if you got it you work harder to make it that perfect feel you know it can have. Just because you have that feel doesn’t mean every scene is going to fall into place you ahve to try scenes to feel which works best.
I remember a movie in the mid 60’s, not sure of the title but similar to Naked City. The opening credits were pl;ayed over a scene of a car driving through New York shot from the back seat. As credits end the car stops, people start getting out as does the camera and everyone walks up 2 flights of stairs camera following. This ended up as about a 2 and a half minute shot. one shot and it felt so dang good. I was always amazed at how it felt to not have a cut in such a long shot.

When you speak of using scopes, I can never overemphasize that same feeling. When the TV station I was working for in the mid 60’s went color, the chief engineer told our video engineers, “The first man I see setting up cameras to a monitor can pick up his check. Use your scopes.”

This is the main thing I have problems with when you look at todays commercials. So often I feel this is some “movie producer wannabe Ad man” satisfying his ego making his mini-movie at an advertiser’s expense. I sure miss the days that commercials were entertaining and actually created traffic at someones business.

To me, pacing is something you feel, you just can’t define it, or explain it. If you don’t feel it, you don’t understand it, and peobably never will. Don’t work so hard trying to find a pace to some type of rythmn. Just go with the flow.
I have been told I edit to music when there isn’t any. But there is no real set pattern to any of my edits if it isn’t being done completely to music, so that may not be totally true. I just look at what I’m working with, and let the action create a feeling. When it feels good, it’s right.

[mr_gfx] “I switched my avid layout so that the video monitors and the timeline are on the left screen and my bins are on the right.”
I use this setup also, with no visual problems. Make sure the settings on the displays are correct for this configuration.

[person] ” vegas won the superbowl”
Vegas did come out well, as usual they made approximately 10% considering that they make their money on the Vig, and that adds up by volume, there was approximately $94 million bet in Vegas, and the sports books profits were reported at $8.8 million. Keep in mind, Vegas doesn’t care who wins or loses, their winnings are not based on that. Why do you think the line fluctuates, they want the bets to be as close to 50-50 as they can get. That way they won’t lose big if the game doesn’t go as anticipated. I wish people would get this straight, and not blame Vegas for everything they are unhappy with in sports.
I personally felt the overall commercial quality was down this year, although there were some big winners. Budweiser always does well, they ROCK. FedEx was good, I liked the Sprint Crime deterent, that cracked me up. My main thoughts are that for $2.5 million per 30 seconds, many agencies are more interested in getting their mini-movies on the air than actually selling a product.
