[DBFilms] “Just for the record, I don’t care one way or the other for the Mac v. Win debate – I’ve used both in the past and I look for the tool that best performs the functions which I require. For me, that is currently a couple of Wintel boxes. YMMV, and that’s cool with me.”

For many years the fine line between film and video editing has been growing even finer. The real editing concepts are actually not so different, only the physical aspects are the differences. With digital offline editing for film even those differences are not so different.

As far as actually learning to be a great editor? I have been in television production for over 44 years. I have been asked many times, “How long does it take to learn to do that?” My answer has and I am sure will always be “When I do I’ll let you know.”

[Chaz Shukat] ” Mac is inovative and PCs copy what Mac develops”
And I presume that is why MAC’s finally added a right click? Is that also why MAC’s are switching to Intel? Is that also why MAC’s have office programs designed for PC’s were always having to be developed seperately for MAC’s? Oh and also the virus thing, funny that there never was a reason for creating a virus for a MAC.
And as to the cowhide, well, never really meant for that to be metaphorically to immulate a MAC, or PC, but I have to admit, my MAC has one editing program, my PC currently has two editing programs plus all my compositing, 3D and Graphics programs. Guess which one I use the most?

[Pixel Monkey] “projects that really do beg for effects – but as an enhancement of the message, not a replacement”

My philosophy of effects has always been: Effects should be transparent just as edits. If you have no content drive the message with effects. If you have content, make the effects draw attention to that content, not the effect. If the effect does not enhance the content, but becomes the content by overpowering the real content, then you should refrain from using the effect.

Having been around the industry for over 44 years, I have seen it grow. Some growth has been good some I’m still not too sure of. Take the skills of a cameraperson (must be politically correct here). Once worked with a guy that could take a camera on wheels and hold focus running toward the subject, using a 10 inch lens. We used every spare moment we had practicing. Camera operators rely so much on zoom lenses now they could never do that and ever see a camera operator practicing when not in a production? We trucked and dollyed cameras instead of zooming. We could still ocassionally pan when needed. Give a young person a computer today and they immediately become a digital artist, not a lot of work or training involved.

I am not saying none of them will become a qualified video or audio artist or producer or whatever name you wish to bestow on them. I am just saying the pool is becoming very dilluted and in some cases very contaminated.

Did I get off course here? Does anything I say even make sense anymore? I really don’t know, and usually try not to get off on a tirade so I don’t offend someone.

I still love this business and am not looking to the day when I will have to go into forced retirement because of no longer being able to contribute.

[Mark Suszko] “I sometimes say “an artist is not his tools”.”

This is totally true, but if your brush is made from grain sorghum stalks, and your canvas actually cow hide still connected to the cow. It becomes very difficult to finish your creation effectivly.

September 18, 2006 at 9:37 pm in reply to: Audio Preference: On-camera or off-camera?

Are we talking drama, or interview? if inerview, there would be no difference than on camera. If we are talking drama, as grin says go with the force. How far is the subject talking from the subject listening, where is the camera (you the audience. What would you hear if that camera was you?

Really wht do yiou feel about the scene, is the sound of the speaker more or less of interest than the visual? Is a change in ambience or sound gonna enhance or distract from the scene.

You are the decision maker in this. Remember there are no set rules, YOU set the rules for YOUR project.

If I had been the one purchasing this deck, first I would have purchased a better deck, second if that had not been possible I would have purchased the remote TBC controller. Since I was not the purchaser, I haven’t had either option, soooooooooo I am trying to find a work around. I think you answered my question tho.

    Thank you, Tim

September 8, 2006 at 10:44 pm in reply to: Theory and Practice of Music Bed Volume Levels

Some people say I mix too hot. Othjers love my mixes. I believe if there is music it should set a tone, and therefore I mix the music up preferably at the highest point it doesn’t cover any of the dialogue, that is a tough line and easily crossed to where the music conflicts, don’t go that high. I personally hate hearing music that has been ridden up and down, it should in my opinion be constant unless there is a large gap adn it needs to come up for effect.

Not much help I’m sure too many variables.
