For Flash video encoding, Squeeze is generally considered the best. Also, there is the new On2 codec for FLV encoding that many of the higher end sites are using, and it is a separate purchase from either Cleaner or Squeeze (but should integrate into both). The On2 codec will give you the best possible quality, but the standard encoder in Squeeze is also quite good. And, if you have a higher, full-res source to use, that would help increase end result quality.

Yes, but he was asking for a free product that would help him convert his one file. Flip4Mac is definitely not free. The only mac app that I know of that convert WMVs for free on the mac is iSquint ( https://www.isquint.org/ ). There are of course some caveats. It only supports WMV 7 and 8 video without the F4M plugin, and will only convert to MPEG-4 or H.264. But once you have converted the WMV to MPEG-4 or H.264, it is then rather easy to convert to DV with QT. You could also try ffmpegX, but I can’t remember if it supports WMV 7 and 8 as well ( https://homepage.mac.com/major4/news.html ).

If your source PAR was 16:9 and the anamorphic size of the source is 720×480, and you encode to 16:9 anamorphic MPEG-2, Compressor will encode it at 720×480, but QT and any other app that uses QT for decoding will report and display the video at 720×404. To get better info stats on your encode, download and use MPEG StreamClip.

Could have something to do with the AIFF files CM is generating. I would take the AIFF and use it in Compressor or A.Pack to output to AC3 and then try the AC3 as an asset in DVD SP. I think I have had issues in the past with DVD SP and using AIFF or WAV instead of AC3 (DVD SP does a bitrate check and I think that caused the issue because the uncompressed audio would send the rate over the limit). If that doesn’t work, try emailing support@popwire.com. They are usually very responsive.

When you encode to 16:9 anamorphic, it is in fact encoding to 720×480, just that QT recognizes the PAR flags and will display the content at 720×405 automatically. No need to worry, your original 16:9 encode is fine.

Honestly, with Compressor 2 and those features for MPEG-2, I wouldn’t use either. It takes exponentially longer to encode with those features and can be very buggy (as in encode will never start). But, I would suggest taking a short clip and running a bunch of encode tests with certain features on/off to see for yourself. I just have not had any luck with any of my installations/updates of Compressor 2 in this area.

I forgot to mention that there are demos available for all of the apps I mentioned. So the easiest thing to do is download the demos and test your source with them and then determine if an upgrade to Compressor 2 is something you need or could benefit from.

Compressor 2, BitVice, MainConcept, and Compression Master 3.2 offer very good MPEG-2 encoding on the mac. It is difficult to say that just one encoder is the absolute best there is today, as I have seen different types of sources (interlaced, progressive, DV, film, animation, HDV) come out better between the encoders depending on what source was used.

First, make sure you are running the latest version Compression Master, which is 3.2.2. Then, make sure your WMV source is using a codec that CM supports. CM should be fine with any unprotected WMV9 file that you throw at it, but if you use a WMV7, 8, or earlier, then compatibility is not assured.
