I just got a .wmv file and I need to convert it to dv codec. I put it in cleaner and will not recognize it. Are their any free utilities out their to convert .wmv to anything so I can use this file. I am trying to avoid buying another piece of software just to convert 1 file.

    Thanks

If you’re on a Mac you can use Flip4Mac PlayerPro. You can open the file in QuicktimePro and simply save it as .mov or you can use wmv directly in anything from iMovie to FCP. You can of course upsample it too from wmv to dv stream or dv25 wraped in mov too.

Yes, but he was asking for a free product that would help him convert his one file. Flip4Mac is definitely not free. The only mac app that I know of that convert WMVs for free on the mac is iSquint ( https://www.isquint.org/ ). There are of course some caveats. It only supports WMV 7 and 8 video without the F4M plugin, and will only convert to MPEG-4 or H.264. But once you have converted the WMV to MPEG-4 or H.264, it is then rather easy to convert to DV with QT. You could also try ffmpegX, but I can’t remember if it supports WMV 7 and 8 as well ( https://homepage.mac.com/major4/news.html ).

Then the first thing he should do is open the WMV in WMP9 Mac (unless he has a PC) and do File/Get Info to see what variant of WMV he’s dealing with.

I suspect going to MPEG-4 or H.264 could result in yet another quality hit. Too much lossy for me. If he has to go that route he might push up the data rate. Won’t make it look better but it can minimize the loss.

Flip4Mac Player Pro is about $50 . . . not free but not like having to buy a full compression app though. If his purpose is to edit the DV file then he’d then be able to import it into iMovie which likely came with his Mac free.

VisualHub can convert WMV to MOV on Mac. And it is free now.
