If it plays fine from the trimmer, and you have not shifted it on the timeline, you don’t have a problem. For your audio sync adjustment go to: Options–>Preferences–>Preview device. Adjust the sync offset.
As for not clear video; in video preview window (alt=4, click for external monitor and try “best full”.

I don’t think an actors demo reel would have copy protection. How exactly are you getting the DVD video into Vegas?

check the properties of each of the 2 clips/events you are using to see if they are 16:9 widescreen.

This is just a guess, but do you have QuickTime on that computer?

How do you get one clip to be 3 hours long? What tapes are 3 hours long?

One thing to watch for is Never scan any photos that were printed at “home”. You will see the tiny ink droplets like a cheap newspaper printing. You also didn’t mention if you were going to zoom in on the photos. Is this a HD or SD video?
