  • Still haven’t found a great solution or an exact fix….please help

Posted by Craig Scime on April 4, 2007 at 7:29 am

I have read the posts on bringing in DVD’s to Vegas, using a DVD player, firewire and a computer. However some DVD’s are very Dark; and I believe this is so because of the differences in set up or something; the question is how to I correct that so it doesn’t look so milky or grainy? Is there an easy setting or corrector to fix the darkness or wrong setup, please be specific, if possible

Also if there is a better way to get short clips from real dvd’s into vegas, or if you know of a good DVD capturing software that goes directly from my DVD drive, please let me know

    Thanks in advance

First, you should use File > Import> DVD Camcoder Disc.

Probably, the best tool to do what you want is the Color Curves FX.

Also, how are you judging if the video is dark? Your monitor may not be set up correctly. How does it look on the waveform monitor?

thanks gary, here’s a bit more. i am using the sony pro field montior that was calibrated by one of my engineers and everything usually looks beautiful; here’s the trick. When I load a dvd in my external player it plays great on my monitor, however the capture window is like half the brightness; to make things worse it only happens on some DVD’s. I can load other DVD’s the same way great, the monitor and capture window are almost identical. This is a big problem since I edit demo reels for actors and they all want there “10 seconds” of fame loaded in. One actor said he used to go to edit with some guy using an avid (big deal) and it always looked great. the footage I loaded yestday for a client, half is dark the other half is great.
    Thanks again

Sounds like your source may have copy protection on it.

I don’t think an actors demo reel would have copy protection. How exactly are you getting the DVD video into Vegas?

You could, if you were of a mind and willing to risk the legal consequences, use a program like DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter to remove the copy protection, then bring the files into Vegas.
