If something goes in front, you’ll have to duplicate your footage layer and mask that out too (to be able to put it back in front), its called rotoscoping. There are several ways to do that, one is with masks. You definitely find tutorials on that.

The “hide shy layers” button is toogled to on, perhaps there’s an interaction with shy layers you’re not seeing.

can you export to any other format? Because this may have nothing to do with your output dimensions.

The reference image is a 3d one, with depth. You can’t acchieve that with footage and 2d.
To get to that example you’ll need a Full 3d application, models and a “mesh to voxel” plugin.
What you can do in AE is learn some “text to sand” tutorials, and use pre composed cubes as particles, It won’t be true 3d, and you’ll have to fake the transition between the dispersed train and the pre-formed person. How far you can get with this is whole dependent on your skill (this is not an easy task to do in AE).
It won’t look as orderly and clean as that image though. You got to remember, particles have no volume, they don’t know when they overlap.

April 3, 2018 at 12:11 pm in reply to: The new version of AE that’s coming out tomorrow (!) has a game-changing new featureThanks for the heads up Michael…
I can see this being usefull for the font changes, and all the things we didn’t have direct access (which is basically font/kerning stuff that I can think of right now). As for the rest, how does it differs from copy/pasting with properties links? Does AE works faster? Does the engine recieved changes or they just “hid the expressions” part?
Because in my workflow I usually have a “one composition controls them all” setup.
But still, I appreciate the updates, I’ll have to wait and see if its a game changer though.

[Kalleheikki Kannisto] “Form has persistent particles.”
Thats true, but you can still map out with opacity. I usually use form for “text-to-sand” effects, even though the setup usually takes a lot longer and you’d probably need to time reverse things. But particular can’t match the options…

Keep turning layers/effects on and off until you find out what it is. Come back when you do.
