    That works….

[Kate Hidden] “when I copied the shape with properties, the opacity was red and locked,”
You just had to alt click the property to remove the expression.

[Kate Hidden] “when I applied a Gaussian blur to the adjustment layer, it just brought out the dark tones of the copied shape instead”
You’ve mistakenly did something, if it brought the darks, either the shape’s video toogle was still on or the order of layers was wrong.

[Kate Hidden] ” I also tried applying the effect to the copied shape layer, but that didn’t work, either.”
It would if you’d set it to be an adjustment layer. (theres a toogle for that).

Good thing you solved it even so.

If I’m not mistaken. Thats a bug that happens when you convert a rectangle to a bezier path. There’s a way to correct it (that I can’t remember now).

But we don’t need to. Just ctrl + alt + C your shape layer and crtl + v it above your adjustment layer. give it full opacity and set the adjustment layer to use it as alpha matte.

It will work even better because any changes you make to the shape will pass through to the blur. (because you copied with properties)

August 13, 2018 at 8:09 pm in reply to: Rotating Vector shapes simultaneously?

The easiest way is to put the paths you want to rotate into a single layer inside illustrator (not groups, separate them into layers). That will import as layers in AE.

You can also use scripts (1) to “explode” them in AE, meaning the automation of ungrouping all those 100 layers…you can then group the ones you want and rotate them.

Both 1: Explode Shape Layers and Overlord are precious tools while working with verctor between illustrator and AE.

  • [Steve Bentley] “Why can’t a twirly unfold with the twirly staying where it is and the attributes unfolding/expanding below.”

Short answer is because Adobe ain’t Maxon, and they mend/add functionality poorly. Though to give them credit, I’m not sure I’ve experienced that behaviour as of now. But I feel I’m familiar with that feeling of getting lost during layer’s properties unfolding.

[Steve Bentley] “Would a different graphics card help the the slow scroll?”

My answer to that would be both yes and no. I’ve had some odd behaviours happening in my previous instalation of AE. Like, everytime I applied Colorista IV to a layer, the whole UI would get slow to a crawl, selecting layers and dragging keyframes were a pain. Also, masks transformations using viewport transform tool never worked (everytime it snapped to some invisible keypress) both this things seem to be related to UI/graphics.

I use a bunch of extensions/UIscripts/plugins and so to debug all that stuff would take my ages. But thanks to a SDD dieing on me, I’ve had to reinstall everything. Zero issues after the windows fresh install.

It could be hardware, but I’ll advise to a fresh start prior to an upgrade.

  • Yes I see it.

Unfortunately its hard to “debug” that from here, since its not a common occurrence.

have you tried applying the effect straight to the footage layer? Other than that, I can only suggest you try to update video drivers (IF the effect uses GPU).

If that plugin developer has a watermarked test version, and you’re willing to collect/upload a stripped down project… I could try to check for hardware related problems and some small mistakes here.

  • Did you set the adjustment layer to any blend mode? Is it scalled or at 100%?

I’m unfamiliar with that specific plugin… so, from your video at the first post. What am I looking at? Because at first it looks decent, though somewhat crushed around the edges, then it gets very pixelated. I thought the pixelation was the problem (and that you’d shown 2 videos in 1) , but I can’t see that (pixelation) in your screenshots. So I’m not certain how it should be rendering…

And thank you for being thorough in your follow up post. It really helps.

  • Hi.

Can you help us help you?

How many and which effects are you using to create that lens flares? Is it a footage or a rendering effect?
What resolutions are you working with? Do you have any precomps that differ from the final exported resolution?
Did you set anything accidentaly to draft?
Are you rendering it out all together at best settings?

A screenshot of your workspace would be nice.

  • [Pedro Luz] “The problem, as expected is that the shadow looks flat on the ground plane of photo, not following the geometry of the ground plane.”

Well, its because there is none, right? So if you want it to follow the geometry, you would have to create some geometry. You can project stuff onto geometry in AE, using lights and setting the emission within a 3d layer’s material option to 100%. But it’s not a workflow that I would recommend.

Displacement maps would be to troublesome too.

If I had to do this, I would bring that reference photo to a 3d app and extrude some shapes there (a lot easier than duplicating planes in AE). You’ll still need to match cameras and then decide if you want to render the shadows in the 3d app by importing your rendered sky or bring the geometry back into AE via third parties (E3D for example). So you’re able to project and composite it there in a workable manner.

August 6, 2018 at 2:08 pm in reply to: Unwanted movement/noise on Objects

If the noise you’re talking about is the noise I’m seeing in the lower side reflections of your cogs. You will be right about
[kale collins] “Or switching the sampling sub division on the reflections tab to a different number?”

The roughness you’re seeing is the result of an approximation of what a real bumpy specular reflection would look like. If you just change the renderer from standart to physical and set a higher sampling (to medium for example) you’ll notice it disappears. Since this method can put more work in calculating how those speculars should be rendered and thus it smoothes those “fireflies” out.
