If you intend to create some distortion, precompose it and use the bezier warp effect. Masking wont help you much here, you gota have separete words for each uneven position/scale/distortion you will end up.

And you can’t use paths too if you intend to keep the photoshop effects you used, they can simplify some text animations in certain cases.

So, to keep it straight, depending on the look that you want, it can only be done with manual keyframing/animation. No easy tricks.

Dave made a very strong point, at first when you discover the difference matte it seems a quick way to solve that problem, but when you get the actual footages it can get easily out of control, a few mismatch (clouds passing) can cause some flicker and you end up having to patch things.

So I basically just mask it in the first place.

I woul’d go a little easier with the mojo, blending it about 30% with the actual scene. I’m not a big fan of that indie look. And the muzzle flashes look a little too big, and like if they were screened over (no blending mode, perhaps?). Rest looks cool, congrats.

It’s best to post a screenshot, we can spot a lot of different things with it.

You wont be able to drag-select a mask if the layer is hidden… toogle it on, then set its opacity to 0.

  • That’s a 3D app and composition, don’t even try to do that within AE.

Build a triagle grid, push some vertices backwards…put some reflective texture…and reflect something… If you don’t know how to do this – but you have the chance – it would still be a lot faster to learn than to get close to that in AE.

  • no bud, you set the bottom layer to use the above layer’s matte… set your video to use alpha matte(not the solid)…and switch off the solid (eye icon).

When you say “…a difference matte…” you meant blending mode right? so if I got things right,

Duplicate the beauty pass, put it above the refraction pass, and set the refraction pass layer’s matte to alpha channel.

I’m having a hard time understanding it too. But from what I got, let’s say he has a frame that if you look at it ignoring the alpha…you’ll see a forest, and if you interpret it as straigh, you’ll see just one of the trees.

I get something like that when I export from 3ds max with something on the background, yet I don’t think AE can do it.
