  • [Agata Kamler] ” I’ve tried resizing the solid/particular layer to match comp size but its still off by a lot”

That’s odd. Scaling to comp size should make things match perfectly except for the lack of proper resolution.

Changing the solid resolution settings on the other hand has no straightforward way of adjust everything I guess. Even if you double everything, emitter size, particle size, speed and etc., things may still don’t match because internally particular uses a world scale that it doesn’t give you access to modify.

  • Usually the “explainer packs” available are less stylized (limb size, poses and such) than that. Are you sure that this one in question is available for you to use as base for the changes?

Sorry I’ve never seen that one… So my only advice is to google for explainer templates, animated characters and so on.

[Jon Ewing] “As an example, if my lightbulb blinks once per second and takes two secodns to cross the screen, what should my timeline look like?”

This is a somewhat odd question to make. In which regard?

The only thing I can guess you may be experience is that your expression is cycling through 0 keyframes. Thus its only calculating the state in time of the first keyframe? I usually don’t take the provided code, I just tend to type either loopOut(“cycle”) or loopOut(“ping pong”) or even better time%framesToTime(x) (x being the amount of frames you want to loop)

[Jon Ewing] “So, I am nearly there, but I am missing some fundamental understanding of how it works. Can someone explain it to me?”

Can you be a little more specific on what exactly?

After you copy the keyframes make sure you select the right track to paste by clicking on the “Path” text. If you select the layer the behavior you’re experience happens.

I’ve posted a bunch of wrong advice before I double checked your post, so I’ll edit it…

keep in mind that before you de-select (that’s what happens when you click on empty space) your text is already not showing, you’re just seeing the mask outlines, those will never appear on the rendered output anyway.

Check to see if your solid dimensions are set to comp size, your masks may be outside its boundaries, also check your mask modes to see if they are ok and not subtracting the effect’s result. They should be set to none.

With the default tools the short answer is no. The long answer is that you can have several layers positioned in such way that gives you the impression of that shape.

With third party plugins (Trapcode’s form or particular, VCP’s element 3d and so on )you could have not only the bending, but the shape itself (rendered apart from AE’s render pipeline though).

To get close to that photo example it would be easier to use a proper 3d application.

  • To be fair to them, – since I’m a critic most of the time – they do tend to implement things to the package. Camera tracking, Camera stabilization, LUTs, path point’s access and so on were all third party options that now are part of the app.

I’m not so sure this one though is a good one to pursuit. The workflow is not at all optimal, the post application of motion blur leaves artifacts within the alpha region (every time I tried, at least). With current available hardware I see the tendency in getting the computation done the normal way in the 3d app.

  • You have to use a plugin that accepts another layer as input. I’ve used Reel Smart Motion Blur (RSMB) from RE-Vision, been a while since I’ve needed this so I’m not sure about other plugins that do that (or if any was added by default with AE’s newest updates)

I’m not sure, perhaps reinstalling whatever AE uses for that export module (AE itself? I guess). There’s also other ways to export h264 out of AE. So you could try AfterCodecs before reinstalling if only that output is the problem.

  • That seems doable with a lot of plugins and applications… anything that supports spherical fields. You could do that with plexus I guess. Adding a spherical container, and a spherical field.

Since you’re looking at it from a front view… only the outer most points (in the z± axis) would remain less affected by the field and thus more at the middle. Once you increase the force/size, they will tend to the outer edges.
