November 8, 2012 at 2:57 pm in reply to: CS6/Decklink Lag on Mac

My settings are already as you say, all black magic 😉

At some point, the lag was optimized, it’s better now, so my request #1 has been solved, now we only need point #2 fixed.

The external monitor is inevitably going to have some delay, we need a setting so the program monitor window on the desktop can be delayed to compensate so during playback it is in sync with the external monitor.

At the moment it is very distracting to watch edits happen first on the desktop, and a bit later on the external monitor (Flanders LM-2140W)

When just watching the external monitor, and listening to the output of the LM-2140, sync is ok. (LM-2140 audio output automatically compensates for video delay when using SDI input)

If one needs to have a different audio path, the audio is usually faster so one can put a delay plugin in the master audio channel in Premiere and fiddle with it until it is sync.

The ultimate thing would of course be to have adjustable delay for each of the card’s outputs. (In the BMD control panel) Then one can trim until all display systems are sync and be done with it.

This doesn’t however eliminate the need to delay the program monitor in the Premiere window on the desktop.

Ok, let’s go a bit further: Let’s also have a button to switch on/off the external monitoring. (like there is in Avid)

I think I’ll put in another feature request at BMD and Adobe….

    Cheers,

    Carl.

October 31, 2012 at 9:29 am in reply to: ISRC software editors?

Ok, bumping an old thread here, I hope someone notices…

Long time DVD Studio Pro user here, now trying to get to grips with Adobe Encore.

I need to put ISRC codes in a DVD master, and to have reliable control over the layer breakpoint, and write DDP files accordingly. I am using PGCedit and Imgburn on PC to burn dual-layer discs for preview purposes, but as far as I know it can’t write DDP files.

I understand DVD After Edit is a decent piece of software that does this, among many other things, and I would have no problem investing in this program, except that it doesn’t run on 10.7 and most probably never will. (I asked the software maker)

Are there any other options these days for this? Mac or PC, doesn’t matter.

    Thanks,
    Carl.

I think I found a simple workaround for this, no transcoding. You need to make a copy of the files through Sony XDCAM Browser.

See the mentioned thread at adobe.

Ok, thanks for your responses. On the Blackmagic website it says “shipping in july”, but apparently this will take a bit longer.

    We’ll wait and see…

    Hi Joshua,

I’d say that in my situation FCP7 has about 2 frames delay and Pr6 about 5 frames, quite a noticeable difference.

BTW: I realise that my points 2 and 3 should really be directed at Adobe. I already made feature requests at Adobe, but maybe it helps to get the point across via this way as well.

    Thanks for responding,

    Carl.

    Hi David, Joshua,

Please allow me to hijack this thread a little further… 😉
I have a Decklink SDI card and a similar problem. About 5 frames delay between program monitor and the external monitor. When I send audio through the Decklink SDI it is indeed sync with the video on the external monitor (as David reports) but I can’t look at the program monitor on the computer screen, because it is horribly out of sync.

As I posted earlier, we need the following:

    1. speed up displaying of frames from Premiere to the output card->external monitor. Driver optimization? Users with Kona3 cards report both monitors and audio in sync, and with final cut 7, there is also less lag, so it must be possible to have a lot less lag at least. In the current situation it is just too much.

    2. I can understand that some latency in the path to the external monitor may be unavoidable. Also external monitors themselves have some lag. To compensate we need to be able to set a delay for the program monitor so that what it displays is sync with what can be seen on the external monitor. Final Cut 7 has such a setting.(under system settings -> play back control -> frame offset.)

    3. Another delay, but for the audio only. This way, people who are using a different interface/path for the audio can adjust the audio delay to make sure their audio is perfectly sync to the picture. Also “sensitive” people like me 😉 can trim audio in sub-frame units (in miliseconds for instance) to make audio sync even more precise.

My conf.: Mac Pro (mid 2010) 8-core, 24GB RAM, Quadro 4000, Decklink SDI with 9.5.2 drivers. Pr6.0.1

    Cheers,

    Carl.

June 23, 2012 at 6:59 pm in reply to: CS6.01 Sony PMW EX1 video tearing gitch

    Hi Nick,

Yes there’s a problem with XDCAM EX files. There is a thread at Adobe:

    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1009064?start=0&tstart=0

    It is still “under investigation”.

Workaround: Transcode to something else, or back to Pr 5.5.2

    Carl.

  • BTW: I also put in a feature request at Adobe for a compensation setting in the preferences of Premiere, so one can delay the program monitor to match the delay in the external playback chain. So at least the program monitor and external monitor are sync when playing back.

That said I do think the current delay is a bit much, probably there are thinks to optimize in the playback engine and/or BMD driver?

    Carl.

    we need two things done:

    1. there should be less latency between the program monitor and the external signal. I realize that some latency can’t be avoided, but it must be minimized.

    2. we need some kind of compensation control in Premiere to delay the program monitor by x frames so at least when playing, both the monitors are sync. (in Final Cut 7 this was done under system settings -> play back control -> frame offset.)
