I am not so sure it was a shot effect and not a post effect.

Of course it might have been a combination of both, but I am more inclined to being a post effect.

The green was probably something added in color correction, but the most important part for me was the blacks and grays. To me it looked more like a B & W image with color added on it. Almost like a dream.

Perhaps there’s been some “American Cinematographer” article about it, is there?

    Thanks, Sep.

In the meantime I made Google search looking for a plugin for VirtualDub. I remembered I had read something from someone that got good results from it.

Well, I did found it and after some time doing tests to learn how to use it, trial and error really, I got excellent results.

In fact I do recommend it. I have already used it in two shots, one of them facing actually a flickering bulb and you barely can see any throb where you saw real pumping before. The wider shot shows absoluely no hint it had any flickering ever. Remarkable.

The only price to pay is that you can’t import the file from Avid and work on it, as you need a file VirtualDub will recognize, like avi. So you lose the original time-code in the process. A small price to pay, in my opinion, for such a huge life-saver.

That is what I am doing, and I get the “Illegal instruction” message.

Yes. Then I pick a graphic output, Photoshop or any other, leaving on the buttons the Help asks to be. And keep getting that Error message.

It seems to refuse to output a graphic file, because it accepts all the other ones.

Is it something I am doing wrong?

When I try to export the single frame, I keep getting an “Illegal instruction error”, even if the settings seem to be fine.

    What may be happening?

No paint tool in Xpress, unfortunately.

I share with you the frustration on how to better handle Avid, particularly on its lack of communication with other programs.

When you import something (instead of camera capturing) you don’t get all you should, like original time-code numbers, and when you export you have to render things, carrying its own problems too.

The tutorials are also a problem, and attending the very expensive training classes Avid offers are certainly not an option for everyone.

I just opened another thread on matte effects, just for not invading yours, but I think you may find what you want in Boris AVX 3. There’s something called “Directional blur” inside the “Color & Blurs” chapter which might be what you are looking for.

Some questions to see if I understand the process.

    1) I copy the same scene onto another layer, do all the process I want to do, then use a photoshop mask to let through only what I want?

    2) Why not add just the photoshop mask, to darken the area?

Forgetting photoshop sounds like a good idea, as I am not getting the mask to work yet, but Avid Xpress has no animatte apparently.

Can you suggest a different way to do this graduated effect?

Explanation: this graduated effect would be applied to solve two separate problems.

    1) A too bright sky on the upper side of the frame. Adding a dusk colour would be nice too.

    2) Some horizontal lights on the background of a theatre stage.

Both would be horizontal upper areas that might need to be moved up or down according to the shot. There wouldn’t be any movement, like zoom or pan.

    amheus,

Can you more specific on how I can do that? I never used Photoshop too much, but if it’s not too difficult I can try it.

Perhaps a step by step explaining can take me there.

I already designed a graduate screen in Photoshop and imported it onto Avid Xpress, placing it on a a higher layer. But it doesn’t show on the screen as it should, that is darkening the light area.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Now we are talking.

Please forgive my probably primary questions:

    1) How do you duplicate the clip?

    2) How do I proceed to make the animatte?

My guess is this procedure works better when the camera is static, or the borders might be visible.

Is there a way to make a graduated area, like on a sky or clearer area?
