I have just been reading another thread where there seems to be a similar problem or quest to mine.

Vanja Marin asked for a way to do a blur effect on a face inside Avid Xpress. The potential use of Boris AVX 3 was suggested, and just by chance that is a path I have just been trying.

One problem I find with programs such as Avid or Boris is how the effects are called or where to look for them.

For instance: image stabilization inside Avid is called “Region stabilize” and is inside the “Image” item.

In fact, for Vanja’s case, there seems to be something in Boris AVX, inside “Color & Blurs” and called “Directional blur” which might be the looked for effect.

For my case, where I need an horizontal graduated area that I can move up or down according to the shot (static), I wonder if it’s something within Boris’ “Keys & matte”, but go find it within the long list.

Where can I find more information on how to better use Boris or what does every effect do?

…don’t remember how powerful the paint tool in Xpress is (or if it exists at all), but I use it all the time in Adrenaline. Drag it onto the clip, create the shape you want in the effects interface, then change the shape in the pulldown menu from “solid” to “blur”. It’s like a controlled way of putting vaseline on the lens.
