There are two problems to play the files directly, through a NAS or directly on the TV.
1) The files were already captured with Avid, so the files can only play through it.
2) My experience with 3.5″ HDD SATA to USB adapters, which would allow me to play the files directly, has been the worst possible in the past. With the HDDs crashing shortly thereafter. To me it was related to some damage inflicted by the adapters, likely byt the power supplies they use. Will never risk that again, particularly with the HDDs where the project media is.
3) I will be assembling a non-RAID server, using Linux, to handle all my media. So what I could do is use that desktop and, using another SSD, to mount a system on it. The hardware would be the same, only the SSD would be replaced, and I have one I can use for that. booting as Linux. What do you think?
4) How would that go on once I have my full blown server, as mentioned?
OK, I think I had a brilliant idea.
Why not mount my present desktop with Linux and the server program, just using another SSD to boot from?
That would be very easy to do.

I just mentioned BorisFX because there’s a Creativecow YouTube video about HiRez, not because I have any preference for them.
In fact I would love to know of any other available filters from other houses and if there’re videos showing how to do things with them.

May 11, 2019 at 11:40 am in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0As you know I have started playing around with some “enhancement” filters in Vegas.
The objective is to “disguise”, as we can’t really correct, characteristics in video images generated in SD.
Perhaps we may agree that there are at least three areas that we can work on to make that disguise be more effective.
1) Sharpen. Pity Vegas has only one filter for that, as we had a few in Avisynth, which I don’t know if any company, like BorisFX, included them into their tools;
2) Border enhancement. This effect unfortunately becomes quite apparent when higher degrees of sharpening are applied. Softening the image attenuates it somehow, but it also goes against the sharpening.
3) Contrast adjustment. This adjustment, applied sparingly and subtly, can do wonders on that disguise I’m talking about.
So my questions are: which are the best filters available for these three areas and who makes them?
Controlling border enhancement is probably the most difficult task of all.

May 11, 2019 at 2:24 am in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0Hi George & Francois,
Thank you very much for this magnificent explanation.
It’s a fantastic help and it seems that Vegas will be my program of choice for this task.
No, rendering times are not an issue… as long as they are reasonable. If they tell me three days I may have my doubts.
Another thing I will have to learn how to do it more accurately is the bitrates, or I may end up with BIG files when there’s no need for them.
It seems that Vegas for video and Audacity for audio will be my programs of choice for simple & sophisticated editing and cleaning tools.

I think I had explained that I was just using the DVD as storage media, never to make a DVD. Never again will I make a DVD.
Of course I know about Vegas not supporting MKV, only mp4. The file was already corrected in Vegas and now I need to export/render it to a wrapper similar to mp4.
Vegas asks for format and template, and it seems to export it in mov. But I don’t know which would be my better option.
It would be better to export in mp4 as container and AVC inside, not mov. What option should I choose from Vegas?
Thanks,
Carlos

May 9, 2019 at 4:22 pm in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0Hi François,
It’s very easy to answer that question. Because MKV is an HD file, DVD is SD.
Where did you get that idea that “MKV is mainly for HD on the Net”? It’s completely untrue!
I mean you can use MKV as a format to use on the net, or even for cell phones, but quality wise is much more than that.
Nothing to do to what avi was to DVD files. Avi, even if it’s also a containing format like mkv, was used for small size, very low resolution videos, to be watched on small screen and not expecting much as a result.
Have you seen 8GB mkv videos, even a feature long video, which is the limit you can store on that disk? I have, I do, watch them at home on 4.5meter wide projection screen. You would be amazed.
Have you seen a comparison between a BluRay and an MKV video ripped from that same BD disc? I have.
Not even a professional, as I am, can perceive the differences. As long as is 1080p and the bitrate is higher than 8,000Kb, even lower on most cases, you won’t see which is which.
Any way to output directly to mp4?

May 9, 2019 at 1:47 pm in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0Hi François,
The final format will be an mkv file 1080p 23.976fps
That I will copy to a DVD as a video file. So the size can’t exceed 8Gb.
Thanks,
Carlos

Me again.
To what can I render my final project that is similar in size to the original mp4 I imported to Vegas?
1) What format?
2) What template?
The file type seems to be mov only. Will the file be large?
The original file is 5.5Gb.
Thanks,
Carlos

May 1, 2019 at 8:12 pm in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0Hi George,
Let me introduce you to “Game of Thrones”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones
It’s a 10 episode per season series, produced by HBO, released in 2011. Now on its 8th and final season.
It’s not based on a game, but on book series by George R. R. Martin.
It’s been a complete success as a TV series. It will probably take several Emmies this year.
Cast is from the UK and Europe, and was shot all over Europe. Some in the USA.
I don’t know about you, but I think TV productions, series and mini-series, have turned out much better than Hollywood film productions in the last 10 years.
My wife and I watch two or three series daily, usually adding a movie too, at home. We are retired, of course.
The video projector did improve our watching routine A LOT! Not for viewing everything, just a few series and mostly feature films, theatrical ones. As series have more dialogue and we use subtitles, it’s very tiresome watching a series on such a large screen.
I had a table made where the 50″ LED TV folds away inside the table. We flip it up to watch TV series.
As we live on an apartment, this is quite a good arrangement.

May 1, 2019 at 5:35 pm in reply to: No audio tracks when importing avi file with Vegas 15.0Hi George,
Sorry to insist, but which is the better way to adjust my LED TV and my projector? What videos should I use?
Yesterday, as every Thursday in the last two weeks, I had the pleasure to watch Game of Thrones in my 4.50m wide screen.
Even if I have sat TV and HBO, the HBO logo is larger than it should and stays on all the time.
So I’d rather wait two days and download the video.
Large logos and advertising are something pay-TV shouldn’t have but has. Something is twisted on that arrangement.
