Walter, you’ve given me a lot to think about. I’ll look further into Boot Camp and EFI since that might be a good way to go.
How did your Macs perform on Windows? Was it too different from running OS X?

Jeff, those EliteBooks look good! I’ll look into them.
Dell also launched a new model called M3800. Though it’s supposed to be thinnest mobile workstation ever, the fact that the XPS I own seems built on cheap materials (already had problems with the screen and battery), and that it comes with only 16 GB and a standard Quadro card doesn’t exactly strike me as impressive for a brand new workstation. On the other hand, the more powerful models, the M4800 and M6800 both look like a brick.
Walter, may I ask the specs on your EliteBooks and what do you usually do with them? In my case I mostly work with the Adobe suite (Premiere, After, Photoshop) with the exception of this particular hd2sd workflow and an occasional render.
Thanks for that EFI link. Does it mean you can either boot on OS X or Windows from a Mac? That sounds really interesting. I’m already downloading the Miraizon Demo as well to try on the MBP.
Overall, I’m not leaning towards one or the other. I guess I’m just looking for the best of both worlds: something portable enough and yet powerful to ditch my huge desktop PC and take on the go. My biggest fear with Mac however, is that afterwards everything might have to be Mac related, while in a Windows PC, you can run almost anything.

Hi Jeff,
I’m thinking about going mobile for my next computer because there are times when I need to work on the go. After a lot of reading I narrowed my options to either Dell precision models or MacBook Pro.
I already own an old Dell and a MacBook Pro 2013 and the MBP beats the Dell regarding materials, portability and overall quality.
However, the lack of specific software options for OS X (like this hd2sd workflow) makes me want to be sure before making any decision.
Even though professional software like Adobe is available for both platforms, sometimes little applications are the ones that make a big difference in workflow and time.

Hi Jeff,
the script reads:
AVISource(“720p.avi”)
I just use it to open the avi file and export it to mpgeg2.
Previous to that, I’m using a script that reads:
SetMTMode(2,0)
MPEG2Source(“Trailer1080p.d2v”)
hd2sd(interlaced=false,OutputColorSpace=”YUY2″)V0.23 gives me a goo quality too, but I have to export the avi with YV12 (lagarith lossless config.) instead of YUY2, since YUY2 support was introduced in v0.25.

Kevin and Walter,
thanks for sharing your experiences. I’ll try to make some tests based on your suggestions.
Thanks!

Thanks Tom. I assumed this wasn’t advisable by software but wanted to confirm in case the newer versions of Premiere or AE had some interpretation capabilities to handle this.

Thanks Adam! I ended up doing that and it worked OK. I just thought that maybe there was some other work around that I didn’t know about.

Thanks Randy! Way much simpler than I what I did. I finally got to achieve a decent simulation using dynamics.
I used a hinge to connect the bottom of the cards, and a motor to rotate the hole system. Also by using a top and bottom bumper I hold the position of the cards. On the bright side, I got a realistic difference in height between the cards which is also what I’m aiming for. Maybe a mix of the two methods will give me exactly what I want.

Adam, I thought it was that simple too at first. However, I’ve read that you have to store a morph target in Zbrush before doing any modifications, or the displacement and normal maps won’t apply correctly.
Also, I find confusing how many sublevels I’m supposed to use when creating the normal map in Zbrush. If I use the lowest level, I loose detail when going back to Cinema.
That’s why I was looking for some information about this.

Hi Brian,
I’m not familiarized with the spline shader. I’ll look into it.
Thanks for the tip
