May 6, 2009 at 4:39 pm in reply to: curious interlacing lines or just poor quality in 24p (dvx100)Do realize that 24p mode (F5) lays off to tape with 3 progressive and 2 combined (interlaced) frames for every 5. It’s all part of the cadence (simple cadence 3.2) of combining the 24 progressive frames into something usable to tape and adding 6 more frames to make 30.
SO… yes, if your canvas window is set to 100% and you step thru the video frame by frame you will indeed see 3 progressive and 2 interlaced every 5 frames.
Now, you said you brought into CT to reverse telecine. Good. That removes the cadence by re-ordering the fields of the combined frames and taking away the 6 extra. It shouldn’t take THAT long. There are two ways to do it in CT one gives you a completely new file and the other just jacks with the one you are using. I like to use the completely new file one just because I’m always afraid of doing it wrong. But it never takes THAT long. I mean, long enough, but never do I say, “man, that took LONG!”
Does this answer your question?
I guess for what it is worth, I NEVER shoot 24p anymore. If I wasn’t going to edit any of it I’d think about it. But really, if you want 29.97 shoot 30p or the 60i mode. If you want 23.98 shoot 24pA and have FCP remove that cadence. 24p just gets in the way and forces another step. Also, if you WANT the 3.2 cadence just go ahead and edit the 23.98 stuff and dump to tape with FCP adding the 3.2 cadence on its own. That way you have a steady cadence of 3 progressive and 2 combined (pleasing to the eye) rather than the possibility of mixed cadences over cuts which (though not to everyone) looks awkward at best.
Ok?
Good luck,
Mike

May 6, 2009 at 12:29 am in reply to: Audio phase cancellation on output to betacam/ any easy fix?Any chance you are using mic outs instead of line outs? Or maybe a setting on the deck?
Sounds like the difference between line and mic levels.

What’s the original size of the clip? Could be that FCP is scaling it in the given sequence. Try loading it into it’s OWN sequence with the same settings. Then de-interlace it and export as something that will match the rest of the other material. Then import it back in.
Good luck,

Command-7 opens up the trim edit window once you have a single edit selected.
Check the manual on using dynamic editing in the trim window.
Cycling thru U changes the shape/side of the edit. You can use the number keyboard to trim.
Does that help a little?

Or the color forum for saturation curves. Probably the easiest way I’ve found.

You’ll need to use MOTION to do this. Short of fading out and scaling down your head you can’t move it in “Z” space.

Here’s an interesting way to get REALLY clear slo motion. But calls for some pre-planning and some extra software (though you can DO it in Compressor – I never got around to doing another version of this as it was once written out – but THAT link is dead — but if you understand what SHAKE is doing you can easily do it in Compressor)

HOWEVER —
What you are talking about is what I like to call the SHREK effect (gah, threeboys will give you odd titles to things) but what it really is is a simple time ramp.
We USED to do it by cutting the video into segments and setting rates to 50%, 60%, 75%, 90%, 100% or so… then came twixor!! YEAH!!! works great. THEN CAME time remapping in FCP and we were ALL SAVED!!!
Where we?
Check out time remapping in the manual — give it a shot… then come back and take a look at this:
Then go back to the manual… then come back here and ask us again!!
Good luck,

Try making sure VIEW – EXTERNAL VIDEO is set to ALL FRAMES.
See if that works.

Now that you have it set… it will remain so.
Good luck,
