Wow… what a mess. You’ve got quite a few problems here.
First, as you’ve figured, you have 3 different resolutions.
Second, HDV. Ugh. Fraught with issues (overcomeable).
THEN they want this to end up NTSC??? It would have been MUCH easier to go from NTSC to PAL especially for DVD as most PAL dvd players now compensate for NTSC. Not so much the other way around. There are ways around this… google for FCP standards converter or just standards converters and you’ll find some options. Some good, some not.
As for getting your footage into some useful editable format… a bit out of my lane.
Get ready to strap in. This is going to be a major learning curve for us all!
I’m sure someone will be around shortly to help.
Good luck,
Mike

The media can be gone, but it will still play render files.
Are you sure a drive isn’t gone?

Well, I hate to say this, don’t take it the wrong way…
If you know how to shoot it you won’t have ANY problems layering it.
So, let’s assume you DON’T know how to shoot it.
You have two options (well, three)
1) Shoot everything on a green screen
2) lock the camera down and take off any auto-anything. You want full manual on this baby. Turn the camera on and don’t turn it off until you are done the entire shoot.
With method 2, don’t play to do any cross axis stuff unless you want to roto.
3rd method… shoot some empty room before doing v2 and try your luck with difference mattes. Won’t be as good as green screen, but could do in a pinch.
Layering would be as simple as putting them in track 1 and 2 and 3 etc. Then, just use a mask or crop. If everything was EXACTLY THE SAME except for the talent you shouldn’t see any lines.
Hint… watch shadows… use feathering.

I’ve seen 2 quality answers here that you obviously refuse to heed.
So here’s another one you can ignore.
Export the clip as an image sequence and take those files into your beloved Photoshop and up rez them all there. Should work great!!!

I just uprez’d 720×480 sd to 720p in After Effects and it held up rather well!!
Now… I did pound the heck out of it with some grading and such, so I don’t have HD to compare it to… but it looks like it did only bigger!!
Can’t wait to get it on the plasma on Tuesday.

Are you suggesting using the MB Instant HD in AE? Or are you suggesting there’s a good (quality) way to do it in straight AE?
I’d like to know too!!
Thanks,

Any chance you can post an image of what you are seeing? Would help.
Gonna put on my teacher hat —
Are you sure you captured the 24p material correct? You used 29.97, yes?
Ok, teacher hat off.
Did you re-capture it? Do the artifacts show up in the SAME place?
Help us help you.

It’s called start/stop detection over here. Might be under MODIFY??? Gah, shouldn’t have started typing until I looked it up. But it’s right at the top. Select the clip in the browser window and then find start/stop.
Good luck,

May 8, 2009 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Best way to backup FCP project? (not using Time Machine)Your best bet for backing up comes with a proper start of media management. Keeping track of all of your captures, elements, pictures, etc in a single set of folders.
Usually, when I begin a project I let FCP set a project folder on my scratch drive. It will create one for each project. All I care about from FCP’s angle is that it puts any captured material there. Additionally, I’ll put folders inside THAT folder. First is EXTRA_ProjectName. Inside that, I’ll have folders for AE, Music, Motion etc.
THIS way, if I want to back up a project all I need to do is backup EXTRA folder and the project file itself (I also have all my project files backed up every night I work on a new one onto a thumb drive).
Any of the captures FCP does I don’t worry about at all. Everything I use is already logged and on tape if I need to go back and get it.
Hope that helps with a start.
