Is it possible to upres a video for use with HD video?
Posted by Kenton Shepard on May 23, 2009 at 6:33 amIn gathering clips for an HD video and I’ve got a great one that’s to low in resolution. I know how to upres a still photo using photoshop? Is it possible to upres a video somehow?
If photoshop can do it to one frame, seems like there ought to be an application which can do the same thing to the multiple frames of a video.

May 23, 2009 at 11:13 amIf you want to do this in FCP, purchase Magic Bullet Instant HD. It’s not the cleanest in the world, but cleaner than what FCP will do.
If you own After Effects, do this in there.
The best way to do this is via a hardware board such as the AJA Kona 3’s we use here. We upconvert SD material all the time for HD editing and vice versa. We also cross convert 720 to 1080 and vice versa as necessary.

Are you suggesting using the MB Instant HD in AE? Or are you suggesting there’s a good (quality) way to do it in straight AE?
I’d like to know too!!
Thanks,
Mike

How low a resolution is it?
If is a standard definition frame size, you might be able to get away with it, but if its a smaller web video it is just going to look crappy no matter what you do.

“Instant HD in FCP. With AE itself, it does very good scaling if the original video is of good quality. Just straight up scaling in AE is worlds better than what FCP does by itself.

Get away with what?

Is this a round-about way of saying that it’s not possible to upres a standard reolution video to HD? -

May 23, 2009 at 10:40 pmThat last line is in his signature… he says that to all the hacks and pros alike.
I just uprez’d 720×480 sd to 720p in After Effects and it held up rather well!!
Now… I did pound the heck out of it with some grading and such, so I don’t have HD to compare it to… but it looks like it did only bigger!!
Can’t wait to get it on the plasma on Tuesday.

I came onto this thread as a neophyte, with a very simple (I thought) question… and my questions was answered with other questions. Again, does anyone on this thread answer a question with an answer?

May 24, 2009 at 12:46 pmGOOD GOD, MAN. We’re EDITORS not MIND READERS!
I’ve seen 2 quality answers here that you obviously refuse to heed.
So here’s another one you can ignore.
Export the clip as an image sequence and take those files into your beloved Photoshop and up rez them all there. Should work great!!!

May 24, 2009 at 1:08 pmWe ask questions because we cannot see your computer or your settings etc.
All the info you gave us is that it is a low res video. Just saying it is low res does not give anyone enuff info to say if it might look ok up resed. You can only enlarge things so much, even photos in photoshop can only be made bigger to a certain extent and then they to will look bad.
Were are trying to help, but you don’t seem to like the help we are giving.
Give us some more info on this “low res” video file.

Here is one
Garbage In = Garbage Out
You can’t make something from nothingIf you take a low-res picture and blow it up, it will pixelate. If you filter that blow-up stylistically, you can hide some of it.
But if you want HD, shoot HD. If you don’t have HD sources and have to use something archival, you will have to filter it via image grading to hide things.
Future advice.
1. Use the Search feature
2. Accurately describe your problem and the tools you are using.
3. Don’t complain abut people helping you for free.Richard M. Harrington, PMP
