Serge’s dvd should be a good place to start.

I’m not sure exactly how apple did their ads, but a quick a dirty way would be to make sure you’ve got a crack-ton of light on that greenscreen, and pull your actor far enough away from it so that none of the spill is hitting them. That way, they’ll be black against the greenscreen.

If they’re wearing an ipod, the you may be able to mess with the levels of the layer that your actor is on, adding some contrast to the elements that you want to pop out, after keying out the background.

It’s quick and dirty, and it will still require some experimentation to get the right look, but it can work.

Thanks, Darby. It didn’t occur to me to simply duplicate the precomped layer. It worked great. Cheers.

It depends upon how complex you want the effect. At first I’m inclined to suggest the Invisible Man tutorial. I’m not sure if that would work out for what you have planned, but it almost seems like a good starting point.

Nevermind, I just found Dan’s opacity expression. Thanks anyway.

Go to Andrew’s tutorial page at Videocopilot.net, and check out tutorial 21. If it doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for, it should get you headed in the right direction.

A friend of mine tried to do something similar a few years ago. I think that he used some very broad brush strokes in photoshop to use as an alpha channel for the eraser smears, and then used the “write on” effect in order to animate it. As far as the blurry/dusty component I think that he used something like this and then just animated a blur effect on it.

I wish I could offer more details but it’s been a few years since I took a look at that project. Hopefully this might give you a good starting point. Keep in mind though that there are so many great tutorials here, even if one doesn’t cover exactly what you want, it’s about taking the techniques from those tutorials and learning how to apply them and use them to get what you’re looking for.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

I’m not sure if the look is exactly what you’re looking for, but Digital Anarchy’s Toonit! plug-in would probably get you close to home. I’m not sure if it works with CS3 though.
