Ok, this sounds hard (at least to me) but maybe I’ve seen some incredible things done in AE so maybe there is hope.
I’m a writer first and foremost-after that I direct and edit my own personal screenplays that I don’t have the patience or am too selfish to give away to some other director. I like to make movies for fun and I show them to Elementary school kids on thier Career Days. They love it every year when I visit and this year I have a cool script in mind.

In these cases, I do all the work my self-write, direct, produce, edit. Naturally, I’m no expert when it comes to editing-good, but I can’t do the complex stuff-yet.

Unfortunately, the script I’m writing calls for some complex effects. Hopefully they aren’t to complex for those of you who are AE masters because I could really use your help!

Many of the main characters are’nt people but ELEMENTS-as in nature.

The first effect is when the girl is swimming and is pulled under water by an “undertow”.

The effect I want is going to be seen under water. I want the “undertow” to realy be two massive water-hands wraping around her and pulling her down. I need the hands to look like part of the water because the ELEMENT that is trying to get her attention is WATER.
Once she is under water, she opens her eyes sees two giant eyes and a giant mouth (NO head or body)in the water that is moving -trying to talk.
Once again, I need these to be part of the WATER. Like, transparent and kind of moving in ripples like water.

Well, thats the first major effect I need.

I have other chacters like WIND and MAGMA that will need some effects but I’ll wait and see if this first one is possible.

I have watched some of Jery Drozda and Andrew Kramers tutorials and they have been awesome help in the past and I have great faith in thier abilities. I hope someone can make a tutorial on this as well. I will be so gratefull I’ll definaltly give credit in the final project! I know if you guys can’t do it, then it probably can’t be done in AE!

If it can’t be done -:( well, I guess I’ll have to make the story into a book instead but it will be cooler and much more fun as a movie!

Either way, I’ll wait to see the response before I continue the screenplay.

Sounds like something better suited for a 3d modeling application.
AE has some wonderful abilities but it is not a 3d application.

The April 2007 edition of Cinefex magazine had a pretty nice write up on Ghostrider, which also had elemental characters (earth, wind, water…) all were built in 3d applications.

It depends upon how complex you want the effect. At first I’m inclined to suggest the Invisible Man tutorial. I’m not sure if that would work out for what you have planned, but it almost seems like a good starting point.

Could you film the girl underwater being pulled down by a pair of hands and then rotoscope the hands with a mask & displacement map so they turn transparent, but watery?
