I have the same player. The Samsung website has firmware updates that turn this feature on. My BD-P1400 now plays BD-R and BD-RE discs.

Here are the things I have read and followed for the last 5-6 years. I don’t know if any of it has changed.

    1. The best you can expect from a “burnded” dvd is about 90% compatibility. Only professionally “replicated” (from a glass master) dvd’s have 100% compatibility with all dvd players.

    2. Dvd media is not created equal. Compatibility with players can vary from 50% – 90% based on the brand. The data I read (again many years ago) gave Verbatim, & Maxell the hightest compatibility ratings.

    3. Never apply an adhesive label on a dvd. Dvd’s spin faster and generate more heat than CD’s and therefore are less forgiving when being read by a player. If a label isn’t applied perfectly, it puts the dvd out of balance, like a tire, and can cause it to be unreadable. Also, due to the heat, the label could come off in the player, damaging it. I’ve seen the “out of balance” issue first hand. Use printable dvd’s and an inkjet dvd printer for beautiful results.

I have followed all the above recommendations and have (so far) never had a dvd that wouldn’t play.

    Hope this somehow helps,

    Bud

Amazing. Definitely need a lot of customer education before handing out a disc. Thanks for the heads up!

I found one thing I overlooked. Getting a firmware update from Samsung for the BD-P1400. Now both the Encore and ImgBurn versions play fine.

Having bought it only last week, along with it being their latest machine, I wrongly assumed it would be compatible. This has the potential for some very unhappy clients. Sending out BD-R discs to prospects, only to have them not play.

    I’m using TDK BD-R 25GB Single Layer 2x.
I also have imation BD-R discs that are printable, that I’m saving for the project once I get a working disc.

It was a new installer. Most importantly, it did not fix everything. You can view the foreground or the composite but not the matte. When you hit “shift A” the viewer shows solid white. I reported this to dvgarage but have not heard back. Dissapointing. I really like this tool.

Good news! Somebody is home.Chris Marler of DVgarage responded (very quickly – thanks Chris!) with a new installer. Fixed some of the issues – enough to use the program. I reported back to him and imagine he will let me know when another update is available.

I emailed them today. Haven’t heard back. Can’t find a phone number for them, nor any indication on their site of future updates. It worked so well, I’d happily pay for an upgrade.

  • Big thanks to everyone! What a delight it is to work with professionals who help each other. And thanks to the COW for providing the community. And the tutorials. And the articles. And the magazine. And…….
