We’re importing from tape that was recorded on a Pan 1200a from a Sony HDC-F950 Cinealta set to 1080 30p. (Camera Copters – they are amazing!) The deck coverted to 720p at recording. Capturing to FCS2 using a Pan 1400 deck. I get clips with a video rate of 59.94 whether I capture using the DVCPRO HD 720p30 or 720p60 preset. Either way the extra frames are there. I’m cutting with footage shot from an HVX200 720 30PN (yes native). When placed in a 29.97 timeline they both play beautifully and the extra frames from tape are dropped.

Is this the way it’s supposed to work? Is there a way to capture at 29.97 and have smaller file sizes?

I don’t want to get down the road and find some problem I overlooked. We’ll also be using Motion and Color.

The end product will be 16×9 SD DVD and web videos.

Was the 1400 set up with User Bits turned on and was it recognizing a true 30p signal? If the User Bits were off, you can’t extract the 30 frames. If the deck wasn’t truly recognizing a 30p signal from the camera, then you can’t extract the 30 frames.

DVCPro HD always records at 59.94, it’s just the user bits that allow you to extract the 30p.

Thanks Walter. I don’t know and can’t check how the deck was set – it was a rental. Will I have any problems or limitations working with the 59.94 video in a 29.97 timeline?
    Thanks again!

[Bud] “Will I have any problems or limitations working with the 59.94 video in a 29.97 timeline?”

Yes…you’ll have to render the footage. Any time you have a different frame rate, it will require a render.

If you’re cutting a 1080i timeline, you should be fine, 59.94/29.97 are essentially the same thing in 1080i. But remember, 720p/30 does NOT equal 1080i/29.97. 720p/60 equals 1080i/29.97.

720p/30 looks more like film than it does video. I just explained this to someone who has been shooting almost 2 years with a Varicam and he was surprised.

    YES
    1080 is 60i not 60p and in the US that means 59.94 (or 29.97 x 2)

I’m having the same problem, but I still have the deck, so I can change the setting. How do I turn on User Bits? Is there any other setting I should change? I have the manual for the deck, but the section which addresses user bits seems to refer to recording, not playback.
