  • Is it possible to make a HD and SD DVD?

Posted by Jeff Carrion on January 10, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I have a client who wants to make a HD-DVD (well not necessarily a “HDDVD” Blue-Ray or whatever) but to be able to distribute to broadest range of consumers we advised to make an SD DVD.

Is there a way to put the same content on 1 disc in both HD and SD versions? So it can be played in either SD or HD.

No. Standard DVD players cannot play any form of HD. BluRay and HD-DVD players CAN play standard DVD’s but not the other way around.

We have now authored four Blu-Ray DVD titles and I have to say I already hate doing standard DVD’s anymore. The quality of our finished Blu-Rays is equal to the original HD masters and it’s just so nice to see the quality of our work maintained on DVD.

Jeff, yes you can do an HD-DVD (dvdstudio pro authored) and an SD-DVD and burn the folders on a single disc. I did this very thing one year ago.

the SD will play in a standard set top player or a pc with a dvd player.

The HD will play on any Toshiba HD-DVD player and any Mac that supports HD-DVD on DVD-R.

The real problem though, is that your very limited to the amount of time you can fit on there.

I’d estimate you could fit a maximum of a 15 minute video in both formats on a single layer DVD-R

And thats if the HD-DVD content is 720P at a max bitrate of 14.1 mbps

    Walter,

I’ve heard you mention before that your company was already authoring blu-ray and I was wondering if you could provide me with some details on the hardware you’re using (internal or external drive? manufacturer?) as well as software? Are you using Adobe Encore?

What are your thoughts on the authoring process as compared to SD DVD’s and DVD Studio Pro? If you’ve answered this before please point me to that post. Thanks!

FastMac.com for the burner. We have the internal unit for our Mac Pro. We also purchased a two unit stand-alone BluRay replicator that runs Panasonic Blu-Ray burners.

    Adobe Encore for the Authoring.

    That’s pretty much it.

Basically the same. Just need to test and tweak the heck out of the MPEG-2 settings before you’ll get the results you’re looking for. Be sure to purchase a BD-RW BluRay disc so you can keep erasing it and re-using it for both initial testing and for master testing later. We didn’t do that at first and burned right through 10 BluRays in two days.

    Walter,

Are there any Blu-Ray players out there that will play recordable discs? I know my Samsung BD-P1400 does not support BD-R.

Ahh, that’s the deal-breaker. The final project will be upwards of 2 hours.

And Walter, you may have misunderstood. I was asking if a DVD that has an HD VTS folder AND a SD VTS folder could be played on either a SD player or an HD player depending on what the viewer has.

The Panasonic models and the PS3 are supposed to work ok.

I wish they all did right out the gate, but it seems there was a reason to disable that capability with the directive coming from the movie studios. I don’t know if thats a fact or not, just something I read at the avs blu-ray forum

Yep, Sony, Samsung, LG all play them with the latest updates.

I honestly did not think that was possible until I saw the post above. See, we all learn something new everyday!

    Walter,

Have you replicated from your Encore projects for distribution, or just burned BD-Rs for more specific people /purposes?

I remember you saying a while back that Encore was giving you trouble. I was also under the impression that it could burn but not make an image for replication.

We looked at Encore, but ended up with DVDItPro HD running under boot camp. It’s total crap, and drove me nuts… not to mention not actually working. Fortunately it was a “wouldn’t this be neat” situation rather than a real job, so no real harm/foul.

    Zak
