I agree there. Paper labels on a DVD or CD will surely ruin your SuperDrive in a PowerBook. I imagine any trayless self feeding DVD or CD player can be ruined by adhesive labels. They are only designed for the thickness of the media and not the added thickness of the paper label.

If we are going down the print on DVD model, let’s not forget HP’s LightScribe DVD technoloy for DVD+R media. HP, BenQ, LaCie, et al make the burners and Verbatim, Imation, Memorex, et al make the media. The DVD+R media may be an issue for some older home DVD players.

Now that I think about it, Paul was a little vague as to what kind of labels he needed.

Nice point about paper labels. If you can’t print on the DVD/CD, I suggest you only use Sharpies for anything going in your SuperDrive.

I just import whatever template into Freehand, Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign, add the content–logos, menu, copyright–and print.

That’s odd. I just installed FCPHD Production Bundle on a new laptop. I am not near my PowerBook at the moment, but I think Title 3D is under an Extras folder for Final Cut Pro 3 on the DVD installation disc.

Unless someone here knows exactly where it is do a disk search on the install DVD for “Boris” or “Graffiti” or “Title 3D”.

If memory serves, I thought they put it in a strange place on the install DVD’s.

Michael Kaminski – Being an XSan forum this may not be the place to ask but I have to give it a shot. We currently have an Avid LanShare server with 15 XpressDV Pro systems running on G4 933’s. The server has been nothing but trouble for almost two years. We recieved an entirely new server 3 months ago and still headaches. We do have FCPHD installed on every Mac. What we would like to do is turn the LanShare server into a regular windows server running raid and use FCPHD. Is anyone else doing something like this and is it possible?

I used to drive a 3D workstation with 3D Studio Max with Windows 2000 Workstation and turned it into a Mac server with PC MACLAN https://ca.miramar.com/ for $189. Now we have gone from $189 to around $10,000 or more based on the information Michael provided.

Do they look okay on the video monitor?

Graphics scaled below 35% in FCP don’t seem to hold up very well. Photoshop scales excellently with Adobe’s bicubic sub-pixel sampling.

It is possible to use a Windows Server, but it has its issues. It will be fine for general assests — .TIF, .PNG., .PCT, .PSD, .MP3, .MOV, et al.
It will not very useful for video assets. No matter what, the FCP editors should copy the assests they need locally to their FCP workstations and logoff the server. If there is a problem with the server, any asset linked from FCP to its server location will cause the LOD (Lollipop of Death) if the server link is broken.

If you are lucky, it may be possible to play video assets off of the Windows server, but I can almost guarantee you won’t be able to capture to it because of network overhead and file size limitations.

There are solutions like this, but I think we have already broken the bank to recycle your Windows server.

If you import a square pixel image into FCP at 720 x 534, you will notice that under the Motion tab>Distort it will automatically place a value of -12.5. It don’t know how FCP is calculating that number, but that is the number you want.

Import any image that is square, odd shaped or larger (eg. 1024 x 768) and apply the value of -12.5 under Motion tab>Distort and your image should appear at the correct pixel aspect ratio for video.

The reason tutorials and tips suggest creating square pixel images at 720 x 534 in Photoshop and resizing them to 720 x 480 (for DV) to import into FCP is that Photoshop has better bicubic sub-pixel calculating than FCP. But sometimes you want to pan and scan an image at say, 1024 x 768 or larger.
