Are you moving and positioning your graphics in the Canvas? You need to make sure your graphics land on a even Y/vertical integer under the Motion tab.

From one of my posts in Feb. 2005
    https://tinyurl.com/crqkr

The trick to bring in Photoshop layers in registration is as follows:

    1. In Photoshop create a new layer at the top of your layers and name it Ref or Reference and make sure it is selected.

    2. Create a one pixel selection in the upper left hand corner. Hint-zoom all the way in and try and make the small Marquee Tool selection.

    3. Go to the Navigator and move your view window all the way to the lower right and hold the Shift key while making the Marquee Tool in the lower right hand corner-you are adding to your first selection that is still in the upper left hand corner.

    4. Fill the selection, the two points in the upper left and lower right hand with Black. Hint-Opt+Delete to fill with the foreground color or Cmd+Delete to fill with the background color.

    5. Type 0, 1 to make the layer 99% transperant or 01% opaque.

    6. In the layer menu hold the Opt key down and select Merge Down from the upper right hand pull down menu (the little arrowhead pointing to right you see at the very top of the Layers Window) over your layer of rasterize text. Then for each layer of rasterized text place your Ref layer just above it and repeat holding the Opt key down and selecting Merge Down from the upper right hand pull down menu making sure you Ref layer is the one selected. What this does is make each layer of rasterized text have the same canvas size and registering the position of your text or any layer element in the Photoshop document. Holding the Opt key while selecting Merge Down prevents the Ref frame from destroying itself when Merging Down. It in essences merges a copy of itself down.

    7. As a rule of thumb I then place the Ref layer at the top of the document, select it and type 100 to make my two pixel dots in the upper left hand corner and lower right hand corner visible so I can see them if I zoom in to make sure they are there.

If you work in SD ITU-601 you could alway have a template .PSD file with a canvas size of 720 x 540 with your Ref or Reference frame already in there along with a SafeTitle layer. If you work in DV you want a canvas size of 720 x 534. If you use these numbers, FCP will automatically recognize number and resize to 720 x 486 or 720 x 480 respectively. If you use a larger canvas size make sure it is in the TV 4 x 3 square pixel aspect ratio. Let’s say your .PSD canvas is 1440 x 1080 and FCP doesn’t recognize that aspect ratio, go to Motion>Distort>Aspect Ratio and type in -12.5 to achieve the video pixel aspect ratio of .9. Don’t ask me why the Aspect Ratio of -12.5 works in FCP, but I do know that is the number FCP automatically calculates when you import a 720 x 540 .PSD canvas into FCP.

As a disclaimer Apple’s knowledge base indicates some slightly different Photoshop graphic starting resolution numbers:

  • I have an issue with the Panasonic AG-HVX200’s expensive P2 media. The AG-HVX200 would have to be able to record direct to harddisk with something like a Focus Firestore to be a viable alternative to me.

I saw a demo using the GY-DV5100 is JVC’s Professional DV camcorder with the DR-DV5000, Focus’s DTE Firestore technology, at Advanced Systems Group in Emeryville CA–San Francisco Bay Area. While this is still a DV video pipeline, direct to disk makes much more sense than P2 media. Sure P2 media has no moving parts, but the demo showed that they didn’t handle the firewire drive with kid gloves either. Harddrives hold considerably more footage and are much less expensive to replace.

I missed NAB and just found out about the JVC GY-HD100U from the JVC Rep. at ASG.

  • In the spirit of this is a real post–since I noticed that this is a cross post in the Avid Editing forum–typing “Xpress” in the Search function of this forum would have produced these two threads of many:

  • Are you editing on the Sequence Timeline or in the Viewer?

Double click your clip to put it in the Viewer and then drag the Audio tab to the Sequence Timeline window. You should then have an editable audio waveform the length of your Timeline Sequence window. You can zoom in to any level and still be able to see a lot more of your audio than you would in the viewer. It will not increase the default height that you see in the Viewer, but you should have more information than just editing in your program sequence track height.

When you are done just Ctrl+click the Tab and select close.

Not sure if this workaround helps you, but it has certainly helped me.

  • If they record to something like a Sony DSR-45 the timecode should match.

I use to dub component and TC out of a Sony PVW-2800 to the DSR-45 component and TC in. The DSR-45 was set to external timecode when it was put in record mode. For an extra measure of safety, I made sure the NDF/NDF or DF/DF matched from the Beta tape to the timecode setting of the DSR-45.

The same will hold true for Panasonic broadcast DV decks.

Spot checking I didn’t notice any drift, but if there was some it would only be a frame or two.

Matching the timecode of either a Beta SP or Digibeta is doable.

  • You could use one of them in Target Disk mode via firewire. It’s not probably the answer to your configuration requirements for your shoot but I wanted to make you aware of it.

How to use FireWire target disk mode
    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

Please note also that Powerbook drives come in 40, 60 and 100 GB sizes which will probably limit the amount of DV footage you can capture since there are applications and data already on the Powerbook you put in Target Disk mode. A rule of thumb is that you get 7 hours of DV footage per 100 GB of harddrive space.

    HTH,
    Bryce

PS You could use two external firewire drives and network the 2 Powerbooks together and then sync/copy the files to you main external firewire drive for editing during setups between shots. If the Powerbooks have Gigaethernet it should be an overly burdensome transfer time.
