Are your PC videos AVI’s, WMV’s, mpeg’s, MOV’s, et al? There are media converters–free and commercial–that will convert to a QuickTime format FCP understands (ffmpegX, Popwire.com, Flip4Mac.com, SorensonMedia.com, QuickTime Pro understand AVI’s).

Do your chroma sharpening plugins (suitable for HDV, HD, DV, PAL DV, SD etc.) relate to your excellent article Chroma Sampling: An Investigation?

I think that article was the lingua franca of explanations in the DigiBeta, BetaSP, DVCAM and miniDV debate and methodologies

Avid DV Express on my last inspection only captured DV 4:1:1 sampled footage. It would be a wash quality-wise.

There is no need to move up to the Sony DSR-45 unless you want the least amount of generational loss. I don’t know if the DSR-25 has component inputs to dub from BetaSP. If it only has composite and S-video input you will be taking a generational dub hit. You could rent a DSR-45 for the dubs and simple play them back in your DSR-25 if you don’t have component inputs on your DSR-25.

Personally I would want a AJA Kona, but that is based on a best scenario situation and not a budgetary one. I also requires more storage horsepower and throughput.

SuperDuper may be your best bet considering the $19.95 price and it works with Tiger 10.4.x.

I have used Carbon Copy Cloner so I can completely endorse SuperDuper, but it does work with Tiger and many other people swear by it.

Anyone want to comment on SuperDuper?

According to Bombich Software: Carbon Copy Cloner –which currently only works up to 10.3.x–you can use your Disk Utility that comes with you Apple operating system to clone a disk.

I’m note in front of my PowerBook at the moment so you will have to take a peak yourself. It should be in the Utilities folder under Applications.

I am thoroughly confused. Was the pickup shots on mini DV?

Why wasn’t the DigiBeta’s transferred to a DVCAM deck like a Sony DSR-45 that can accept timecode. I used to make DVCAM dubs of my Beta tapes all the time.
DigiBeta component out —————–> component input of DSR-45
DigiBeta timecode out (BNC spigot) –> timecode in DSR-45 (with the DSR-45 set to external timecode)

I haven’t tried this with the scratch disk media FCP records during capture, but QuickTime Pro which you recieved with FCP can reassign the beginning timecode for QT clips. You would have to drop the file on your QT icon or FCP will launch if you click on the capture scratch media. Will the capture scratch media show the new modified timecode in FCP? Will you have to export the clips and reimport? I don’t know.

I do know there is no such time as inserting timecode onto a previously record DV tape.

I have one but it is slightly newer than yours. It has no noise yet, but I only use it as a system backup drive and it has my demo reel stuff on it.

As far as a workhorse firewire drive I would go with G-TECHNOLOGY – Professional Strength FireWire and USB Storage Solutions that have 800Mbit/sec firewire interfaces as opposed to the 400Mbit/sec of the Maxtor.

I only bought the Maxtor because I got a substantial instant discount at CompUSA one weekend.

The chatter may be a drive ready to go south. It could go instantly or hang on for a couple of weeks.

The Sony DSR-45 can take external timecode so I would dub component & timecode out of the Beta to component in and timecode in on the DSR-45. All timecode would match and redigitizing would be no problem.
