Matrox One Touch II with FCP
I am using a Matrox One Touch II 250 gb firewire drive as my scratch disk with FCP. (Scratch Disk in FCP means the drive you are editing on, right?). The drive is starting to make a crunching sound while it is working. That scares me. I’m not sure if it is normal. I’ve had the drive for about 5 months and it has travelled with me and only this last week did it start making this sound. Of course, I’ve been using a PowerMac older G4 computer and a new PowerMac G5 with this drive. This past week I started editing with the drive hooked up to a PowerBook G4 1.67Ghz, 17 inch, 2 gig RAM computer.
Anybody else here use the MATROX One Touch II for a scratch disk. Have u experienced this crunching sound? -

I have one but it is slightly newer than yours. It has no noise yet, but I only use it as a system backup drive and it has my demo reel stuff on it.
As far as a workhorse firewire drive I would go with G-TECHNOLOGY – Professional Strength FireWire and USB Storage Solutions that have 800Mbit/sec firewire interfaces as opposed to the 400Mbit/sec of the Maxtor.
I only bought the Maxtor because I got a substantial instant discount at CompUSA one weekend.
The chatter may be a drive ready to go south. It could go instantly or hang on for a couple of weeks.

hi thanks. What about the g-drive-mini? It is bus powered, FW 800, and they have i believe only 2 models that are 7200 RPM, but those are out of stock. Still do u think this would be a good choice? I don’t know if the “mini” version is less reliable as a workhorse than the standard size version. Have u heard anything about it?

I only use Maxtor for backup storage and some offline DV work. I use G-Tech, LaCie and Medea for all primary work as these companies develop products which are made for constant audio / video work.
