Ghosting FCP project drive
I have my FCP project and source footage on a Maxtor firewire drive which is now about to crash, because it’s making weird noises. So i want to back it up. Problem is that FCP always has to reconnect the media when things are moved to a new drive. But reconnecting won’t work in my case. For some reason it messes up the reconnect for about a third of the project, and then it essentially has to be re-edited! Now there is nothing I can do about this. I named all the capture files as they were captured and gave them all different names. there is no reason why it should not reconnect properly. I even tried to reconnect problem clips individually to the exact capture file and it still messes up.
So the only solutiin I can think of is to ghost the drive to the new drive so that FCP thinks that nothing has moved or changed and so it won’t look to reconnect the clips. I hope this will work. The new drive will be the exact same model as the problem drive, a Maxtor One Touch II 250 gig, 7200 rpm FW/400 USB 2.0 drive.
Any thoughts if this will work?
By the way, I only have Symantec Ghost software for the PC, so I will connect both drives to my PC laptop to conduct the Ghost. -

Save yourself the expense.
Use Media Manager to copy the files, and in the process create a new project file which will end up being all connected to the copies.

wow! Can i do this onto the backup firewire drive? How is it done? And are you sure FCP won’t need to reconnect the files?

According to Bombich Software: Carbon Copy Cloner –which currently only works up to 10.3.x–you can use your Disk Utility that comes with you Apple operating system to clone a disk.
I’m note in front of my PowerBook at the moment so you will have to take a peak yourself. It should be in the Utilities folder under Applications.

SuperDuper may be your best bet considering the $19.95 price and it works with Tiger 10.4.x.
I have used Carbon Copy Cloner so I can completely endorse SuperDuper, but it does work with Tiger and many other people swear by it.
Anyone want to comment on SuperDuper?

Select all in your Browser’s project tab, then control click on any clip or sequence… Select Media manager from the pop up menu. Select copy, Make new project file, set destination, and use current settings. Makes a new project file all connected to the copied clips… only thing that it does that I don’t like, is it doesn’t keep all the new clips in folders like they might have been in the original project file. However you can then make a copy of your current project file, and simply reconect to the new media (keeps the bins that way). This works and is exactly what you are trying to accomplish.
The backup programs mentioned in the thread really aren’t what you were asking about doing. The Media Manager has a great explaination in FCP’s help menu… open it, and read about it there. It can do a lot of stuff for you!

thanks I really hope this works, i won’t be able to try it until my replacement firewire drive comes in, probably in a week. But as long as I don’t have to reconnect the media. But if in Media Manager it automatically reconnects, I hope the same problem doesn’t occur where it wrongly reconnects some of the clips, then I’m back to square one. Where do u make a new Project File? Right in the Media Manager/Copy dialog box?
