You could export your solid color as a .PCT (PICT image file) and place it over your footage that you have color corrected–perhaps using the the Color Correct 3-way–and select the composite mode for the solid PICT like Screen, Overlay, Multiply, etc. You can adjust the tint with the opacity of the solid PICT.

You can also create your own solid from the Generators in the lower right hand of the Viewer.

Check you manual concerning Composite Mode.

I am a part-time Final Cut Pro instructor at Academy of Art University in San Francisco and the book you are looking at is the official textbook from which we teach. It is an excellent book.

You probably want to look at the most recent edition which is:

The book you mentioned covers Final Cut Pro 4.5.

It can be put on a data DVD (like a data CD as oppose to an audio CD). My experience is 210 to 220 MB per minute.

I generally never make my imported graphics for pan and scan larger than 1.5x the the video resolution I am working in. I have gone 2x and 2.5x on occasion if the situation warranted it.

If you have Motion 1 or 2 from the Final Cut Pro Suite I would think about processing the timeline there. My experience with FCP 4.5 and earlier is the any graphic less than let’s say 50% to 35% begins to look like c**p.

Quite frankly if all you are doing is tinting and adding one photofilter filter in AE, that can be duplicated within Final Cut Pro.

Digital Film Tools (link) is one plug-in maker for FCP, et al that I own but there are others perhaps a little more inexpensive.

If you do a search on LaCie here you find many people that have had issues with them. I for one cannot comment. Personally I would go with g-technology.com products if I went firewire.

For your needs you could probably go with a SATA PCI or PCIe RAID card–depending on your G5 model–and an external enclosure. If you put your Mac/FCP configuration as part of your signature others on this forum will be better informed as to what specifically to recommend.

You can always go to the AJA.com website and get their whatif data rate calculator. The storage need is listed at the bottom of the window. Type in how many minutes/hours you want to store for whatever format you will use predominantly–DV NSTC, SD 720×486 8-bit/10-bit, 1920x1080i, etc.:

It will also educate you in how much data rate each format requires.

This thread may be worth a read. Cinema Tools can make a 24fps EDL from a 30fps and a 30fps EDL from a 24fps EDL.
